Overview
We are seeking a Classroom Teaching Assistant with British Sign Language L2. Copleston High School is an 11-18 mixed comprehensive school located in Ipswich, Suffolk. This is a permanent position with 35 hours per week across 39 weeks per year,. Salary: £22,078 per annum. Reference: 7925. Start date: as soon as possible.
Location: Copleston High School, Ipswich, Suffolk IP4 5HD. Closing date: 10 am, 20 October 2025 (date may be earlier if a suitable candidate is appointed).
Responsibilities
- Facilitating access to learning in the mainstream through supporting communication and understanding, which may be through spoken language, British Sign Language (BSL) or a combination of both.
- Promoting deaf awareness, social inclusion and understanding.
- Delivering interventions and modelling strategies and support to school staff.
- Following the advice of professionals to ensure a coherent approach to support.
- Working collaboratively with colleagues and meeting with the teacher of the deaf to plan and monitor support.
- Keeping accurate records as directed by staff.
- Forming effective working relationships with staff and families.
- Supporting individual students and groups of students; you must be motivated, patient and highly organised.
Qualifications
- BSL Level 2 (British Sign Language Level 2) qualification is required.
- GCSE Grade C or above (or equivalent) in Mathematics and English is essential due to the role including Mathematics and Numeracy intervention.
- Experience of working with children and ideally experience of the needs of deaf learners.
- Good communication skills and the ability to build effective working relationships with children and staff.
- Deaf awareness.
