Through our waste contract with Greater Manchester Combined Authority, SUEZ has made a commitment to set up re‑use shops on our Household Waste Recycling Centres (HWRC's) to resell donated items and generate £300,000 annually to be reinvested in social projects in Greater Manchester. As a shop operative you will be in charge of the daily running of our re‑use shop, based at Woodhouse Lane HWRC, liaising with the re‑use hub manager to make sure the shop is fully stocked and that everything is properly stored or made ready for sale.
This will involve you:
- merchandising stock, organising, preparing, pricing and presenting donations for sale, to increase sales and ensure customer satisfaction.
- managing stock and communicating to the re‑use hub manager what stock the shop needs delivering.
- operating the cash register, counting / reconciling cash and credit card receipts, processing returns and refunds.
- ensuring goods are sold at appropriate value and all rejected items are disposed of appropriately.
- making certain that collections and deliveries are arranged in an efficient and cost‑effective manner.
- maintaining the security of the shop premises, stock and cash.
You’ll be expected to promote the values of the shop and the charitable nature of the re‑use scheme in Greater Manchester, at the same time as providing excellent customer experience to encourage repeat custom and the smooth and profitable running of the shop.
What are the requirements?
You will be passionate about the environment and in particular this re‑use project, with prior retail experience and a real enthusiasm for providing excellent customer service. Either you will have knowledge of recycling and upcycling, or be willing to rapidly develop it, but you should have an understanding of maintaining stock, merchandising and the ability to handle financial aspects of retail, along with:
- A flexible attitude to work as shift work and weekend work will be required.
- The confidence to initially work alone in the re‑use shop (until volunteers are recruited).
- Excellent teamwork skills as you will also work closely with site staff on the HWRCs.
