We are seeking an enthusiastic Specialty Doctor to join our well‑established palliative care team at Duchess of Kent Hospice / South East Community Palliative Care Service. This varied role includes working across the Duchess of Kent Hospice inpatient unit and the South East Community Team, with a mix of clinical responsibilities including patient review, triage of referrals, community visits and supporting advice services.
You will work as part of a multidisciplinary team to deliver specialist palliative care, contribute to teaching and supervision and participate in the on‑call rota. Flexibility is required to support different areas of the service depending on clinical need.
Key responsibilities- Patient review and triage of new referrals.
- Respond to community and out‑patient visits.
- Support and provide advice for clinical teams.
- Assist with urgent reviews of patients at home or as an outpatient.
- Review patients under the care of the team in Wallingford Community Hospital.
- Co‑operate with the multi‑disciplinary team to maintain optimal symptom control and support relatives and carers.
- Maintain accurate and comprehensive records.
- Cross cover the Duchess of Kent inpatient unit and other parts of the service as necessary.
- Provide first‑on‑call service for the inpatient unit.
- Contribute to teaching and supervision of junior medical staff.
- Participate in the hospice education programme, journal club and mandatory training sessions.
- Contribute to medical audit, quality improvement projects and clinical governance.
- Full GMC registration.
- MRCP or equivalent.
- Full UK driving licence.
- Minimum of four years of postgraduate medical training or working towards this.
- Experience in a relevant specialty (e.g., general medicine, GP training).
- Experience in palliative medicine.
- Ability to manage clinical workload and prioritise effectively.
- Strong communication and teamworking skills.
- Experience in audit, quality improvement or clinical governance.
- Teaching or supervision experience.
- Motivated doctor with a strong interest in palliative medicine.
- Confident managing complex patients.
- Excellent communication skills and commitment to ongoing professional development.
- Evidence of effective team working, caring attitude towards patients and carers.
- Knowledge of clinical audit and research processes, with ability to apply evidence‑based practice.
- IT skills, especially use of databases.
- Systematic organisational skills and ability to prioritise clinical workload.
- Full driving licence required.
- The post holder is expected to maintain professional development in line with guidance issued by the Royal College of Physicians or Royal College of General Practitioners. Annual appraisal and study leave (with budget) are available.
- Pre‑employment checks—including a Disclosure and Barring Service check—are required before appointment. Referees must include one current employer and cover a minimum of the last three years of employment.
