Join a pioneering maritime technology company at the forefront of sustainable innovation. Our client is revolutionising global shipping by developing cutting-edge wind-assisted propulsion systems that reduce fuel consumption and emissions. With strong momentum and an expanding order book, they are now looking for a dynamic Controls Engineer to shape the future of their control systems from the ground up. This is a rare opportunity to step into a blank-slate role where you’ll take ownership of the entire controls lifecycle—from architecture and algorithm design to on-board commissioning. While 3–4 years of experience is ideal, the company values curiosity, self-direction, and a growth mindset above all.
Key Responsibilities:
- Define and manage system architecture for integrating sensors, effectors, and core processors.
- Design and evolve robust control algorithms that ensure performance, reliability, and user-friendliness.
- Develop intuitive Human-Machine Interfaces (HMIs) tailored to demanding marine environments.
- Lead on-site commissioning of control systems, conducting full-spectrum troubleshooting.
- Collaborate across mechanical, electrical, and software teams to ensure seamless integration.
- Capture, document, and maintain technical requirements from concept through to support.
- Build and lead the controls engineering team as the company continues to scale.
Requirements:
- Strong understanding of control system architecture and scalable sensor/effector designs.
- Hands-on networking experience in at least two of the following: IP, CAN bus, Modbus, NMEA, Serial.
- Proven experience in diagnosing and resolving real-world issues in deployed systems.
- Background in automation or commissioning, ideally within marine, autonomous, or industrial settings.
- Experience in HMI development for operational clarity and ease of use.
- A self-starter with a passion for problem-solving, learning, and autonomy.
- Willingness to travel for global sea trials, factory testing, and monthly in-person company meetups (all expenses covered).
Desirable (Not Required):
- Advanced control algorithm development (e.g., Matlab/Simulink, model-based design).
- AI/ML applications in control systems.
- Knowledge of maritime industry standards and regulations.
Qualifications:
- Degree in Control Engineering, Electrical/Electronic Engineering, Mechatronics, or a related field.
- Chartered Engineer status preferred.
What’s on Offer:
- Competitive salary: £45,000 – £65,000+ depending on experience.
- Fully remote working environment (UK-based), with monthly in-person team meetups (2–3 days).
- Monthly engineering workshops.
- Regular on-site testing and ship visits.
- All travel and accommodation expenses covered.
- Generous benefits: 25 days annual leave + bank holidays, pension plan.
- Accelerated growth path with the opportunity to build and lead the Controls Engineering function.
- A chance to drive innovation in the global push for maritime decarbonisation.
