Saint Pauls House is looking for an accomplished Deputy General Manager to become the operational number two at our independent boutique hotel, restaurant and bar overlooking St Pauls Square. This is a highly visible, hands-on leadership role across a 34-bedroom hotel, a busy food-and-drink operation and a varied programme of private events, live music and high-energy trading periods. Working closely with the General Manager and departmental leaders, you will take ownership of day-to-day venue operations, lead from the floor and assume full operational responsibility whenever the General Manager is absent. The role Operational leadership Act as the senior operational leader on duty, directing the venue team and ensuring a coordinated, professional service across all departments. Open and close the business as required, lead operational briefings and maintain effective handovers between shifts and departments. Take ownership of guest concerns, operational incidents and service recovery, using sound judgement and escalating appropriately. Deputise for the General Manager and protect the performance, reputation and culture of the venue in their absence. Restaurant, bar and events Lead restaurant and bar service standards, remaining highly visible during peak trading periods. Ensure private events, functions, live music and special trading occasions are properly planned, briefed and delivered. Work in partnership with the Head Chef and rooms team so that guest expectations, function requirements and operational priorities remain aligned. Maintain disciplined controls around cash, stock, wastage, security, licensing and closing procedures. People and culture Support recruitment, onboarding, training, succession planning and performance management across the venue. Coach managers and team members in real time, recognising strong performance and addressing concerns promptly and fairly. Produce and review rotas, ensuring the right skills are deployed while labour remains within agreed targets. Help create a positive, accountable and respectful working environment in which high standards are consistently maintained. Commercial and compliance Support the General Manager with budgets, weekly results, labour, sales, margins and agreed operating KPIs. Identify practical opportunities to grow revenue, improve the guest experience and control avoidable costs. Ensure compliance with licensing conditions, health and safety, fire procedures, food safety and company standards. Complete management checks and follow through actions rather than allowing issues to remain unresolved. What we are looking for Experience as a Deputy General Manager, Hotel Operations Manager, Restaurant Manager or senior Assistant Manager in a quality-led hospitality business. Strong food-and-beverage leadership, with the confidence to run busy services, events and late trading periods. Useful exposure to hotel bedrooms or a genuine willingness to develop a broader understanding of hotel operations. Commercial awareness across sales, labour, margins, stock and operational cost control. A proven ability to lead, coach and hold people accountable while maintaining a positive working culture. A calm, credible and decisive management style, with excellent guest-facing and communication skills. A personal licence is desirable but not essential at application stage. What we offer Basic salary of Β£40,000Β£42,000, depending on experience. Tronc/service charge paid in addition to basic salary and a performance bonus opportunity of up to 10%. 28 days holiday.
