The opportunity involves building relationships, channels, content, events, and feedback loops to create an active community of researchers, data scientists, and ML engineers for Substrate. Substrate is developing a network of autonomous wet laboratories, serving as the infrastructure for AI-driven biological discovery.

You will own Substrate's community function end to end, with immediate priorities including:

  • Establishing Substrate's presence in relevant communities such as AI-biology conferences and academic research groups.
  • Building and managing community channels and creating content that showcases the platform's capabilities.
  • Representing Substrate at conferences and tracking engagement to inform commercial and product decisions.
  • Mapping existing relationships across research institutions and AI labs to support a community-first strategy.
  • Publishing substantive technical community content to demonstrate the platform's relevance to researchers.
  • Coordinating the launch event for the London node and managing researcher outreach.
  • Establishing a feedback loop between the community and product teams.
  • Building the San Francisco community presence in parallel.
  • Developing a sustainable content calendar and refining community infrastructure.
  • Producing a community playbook documenting effective strategies for engagement.

The ideal candidate will have:

  • Five or more years in community management, developer relations, scientific outreach, or technical partnerships within AI, tech, or biotech companies.
  • A demonstrated ability to build a technical community from a low base, producing credible content and managing relationships.
  • Strong written communication skills and scientific or technical literacy to engage with biology, data science, and AI practitioners.
  • A willingness to be based in London or San Francisco, with travel to key scientific conferences.
  • A scientific background (BSc or higher) in biology, biochemistry, computer science, or a related field.
  • Experience in a developer relations or community role at a platform or infrastructure company.
  • Existing relationships within the AI x biology research community.

Compensation is competitive against market rates for senior community hires at venture-backed companies, with a hybrid work model favouring in-person collaboration. Candidates are expected to be present at the King's Cross lab and office most working days during the first six months.

To apply, include a short message about your suitability for the role and the challenges of building a technical research community from scratch, along with your CV and links to any relevant content. The application process consists of a conversation with Anna, a short content task, and an in-person session with the founding team.
