Due to continued growth within SubConnect, we are looking for an experienced Technical Author / Document Controller to support the development, testing and delivery of Subsea Telecommunication technology products as part of a multi-disciplinary team. You will own the control, issue and maintenance of engineering documentation across the full design-to-delivery lifecycle, ensuring documents are accurate, traceable and released on time. Working with Design Engineers and Production, you will coordinate reviews and approvals, manage document transmittals, and release drawings and assemblies in line with internal processes.
You will manage document issues, change requests and configuration updates, completing impact assessments to keep construction manuals, parts lists and BOMs, internal databases, and web tools up to date. You will also respond to technical queries, support audits and compliance with ISO9001 and ISO17025, promote HSE-aligned safe working practices, and provide wider document control support to the SubConnect team.
Responsibilities
- Follow safe working practices and ensure compliance by others, including customers.
- Support the day-to-day management of projects from the design phase review process to project completion against the project schedule.
- Aid the facilitation of regular design reviews with the team to ensure compliance of design process and delivery of product against relevant specifications, project deliverables, timescales & milestones.
- Liaise with the Design Engineer(s) to release design assemblies and detailed engineering drawings.
- Liaise with the Design Engineer(s) to produce design Bill of Materials (BOMs) and Construction Manuals (CM).
- Control and issue of Kit numbers and CMs for the Universal Jointing Consortium (UJC), updating the UJ/UQJ Explorer data as required, and releasing the quarterly editions.
- Process requested/required updates to documents on host database which is accessed by external parties on behalf of the UJC members.
- Liaise with the Production team and the Design Engineer(s) on change or clarification requests on components or BOMs.
- Responsible for the Issues & Changes procedure, to ensure well documented requested/required updates to parts, drawings, assemblies and construction manuals.
- Create and maintain the UJCM, UQJCM, and other joint construction manuals in accordance with current HSE legislation and ensuring safe working practices.
- Manage change requests from various stakeholders regarding changes to construction manuals.
- Assist with all technical queries surrounding the BOM’s and DMs, providing detailed responses if necessary.
- Maintenance of the Kit-Search facility on the UJC website via JADE.
- Compilation and maintenance of Qualified Cable Combination data in conjunction with the UJC Coordinator for publication on the UJC Website.
- Follow the company quality system and assist in maintaining ISO9001 & ISO17025, especially relating to Controlling Design and Development changes.
- Support the wider SubConnect teams with document control functions.
The above activities are all interconnected and change to one aspect has repercussions for others. So, an overall duty is to conduct impact assessments to ensure that all systems, documents and applications are maintained accurately (e.g. development changes impacts on several construction manuals, BOMs, JADE, website etc.).
Qualifications, Skills and Experience
Required:
- HNC/HND/Degree and/or relevant experience in engineering subject or technical training and experience.
- Strong background of managing technical and engineering documentation.
- Considerable knowledge of MS Suite, including Outlook, Word, Excel.
- The ability to work on complex issues both in a team and individually, under pressure and in a quality way.
- Ability and willingness to switch disciplines from one job to another in order to meet the needs of the business.
Ideal:
- Technical training and experience appropriate to the work involved in subsea telecommunication jointing and allied technologies.
Location
This role is based in the Chelmsford office and follows a hybrid working arrangement, with working 3 days in the office and the other 2 days working remotely each week.
