Position Overview
This role leads SubCom’s efforts in identifying, contracting, and managing 3rd party commercial providers for Marine Services. These services include providers of vessel capacity for our cable installation, plow burial, Survey and Freighter capacity that support installation and movement of our cable networks globally. SubCom is entering a period of significant growth and looks to build upon our existing capabilities by bringing on a leader to strengthen these internal processes and capabilities and brand in the marketplace.
This role represents SubCom commercially in the marketplace and is responsible for the delivery of expected outcomes at defined costs. We seek a seasoned negotiator able to anticipate risk and safeguard the company from all the variables at play in the Maritime environment. This role requires significant industry experience, thought leadership in problem-solving, and a strategic mindset to establish a long-term vision for the external, variable capacity we will bring on to augment our internal resources.
This role manages a small functional team. This leader will train, mentor, and performance manage the team along and engage cross-functional internal SME resources as required to manage the range of scenarios under consideration. Strong analytical skills, financial acumen, communication, and industry experience are required.
The need for this leadership position is immediate as the incumbent has moved to a new role. We seek to upgrade internal talent and bring on someone who has deeper Charter Management experience across the world to support our need to expand capacity. The financial impact of this role and team is expected to grow significantly; this is a strategic hire with direct impact on our financials and ability to deliver for our customers. We anticipate this role managing $100M-$200M in spend across vessel charters, freighters, survey vessels, and others in FY27 with significant customer schedule impact.
This role can reside in Newington, NH or remote. In our assessment of candidates, we believe there are untapped resources in the UK with great experience of reasonable wage rates. Our intent is to hire in the UK.
Responsibilities
- Provide leadership for strategy and execution of external vessel engagements and other 3rd party marine supplier engagements as we augment internal SubCom installation capacity with 3rd party charter providers.
- Act as SME for the market of available vessels able to provide SubCom supplemental capacity.
- Manage the effectiveness of SubCom spend ($100M-$200M) across external providers (3rd Party Charters, Freighters, Survey Vessels, other).
- Continuously manage relationships with 3rd party providers; provide SubCom market intelligence on aggregate capacity, costs, capabilities, and performance history of available providers.
- Lead ongoing strategic assessments of internal requirements for capacity against available options in the market – assessing Demand vs. Supply – volume, technical requirements, and costs – globally.
- Support the commercial team with the chartering process including sourcing, evaluation, negotiation, and contract execution. Drive internal SubCom teams to ensure technical execution of projects in conjunction with 3rd party providers.
- Lead the internal SubCom team tasked with managing commercial contracts for external capacity. Manage the team consistently with SubCom policy, setting goals to promote Strategy, Execution, and Talent (SET) for a high-performing organization.
- Support SubCom in developing this key internal capability as we expand our capacity.
- Act as liaison between vessel owner and internal project teams/master scheduler to ensure key periods such as maintenance periods, dry dockings are captured within our own planning.
- Ensuring vessel owner has in place correct deployment procedures and where necessary any specific procedures related to SubCom cable and plant.
- Lead and manage annual vessel and owner management audits.
- Ensure that charter payments are accurately captured and that internally these are allocated to the correct project. Vessel downtime to be accurately captured and reflected within the forthcoming billing cycle and business is not paying for days it is incorrectly billed for.
- Where the vessel owner encounters issues, ensure that internal resources are appropriately engaged to resolve issues as quickly as possible, then working with owner on agreed improvements.
- Tracking 3rd party vessel progress with key performance metrics.
Qualifications
- Degree in Maritime Studies, Logistics, Engineering, or related field.
- Project Management Experience.
- 10+ years of vessel chartering experience in offshore construction sector.
- Strong knowledge of offshore vessel types and capabilities.
- Offshore experience/knowledge preferred.
- Prior Procurement and/or Supply Chain Management leadership experience in a Maritime setting.
- Executive presence / Cable skilled negotiator.
- Strong Financial Acumen.
- Familiarity with industry contracting forms such as BIMCO contracts.
- Familiarity with Kep Performance Metrics in managing vessel owners.
