About the team

We focus on delivering high‑quality, accessible and performant user interfaces that allow audiences to discover and enjoy content easily.

The team works closely with Product, UX and backend engineering teams, and integrates with a range of internal services and third‑party platforms to deliver a seamless viewing experience.

The Web team sits within our wider Engineering team and is part of our Audience Video & Technology division.

About the role

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Software Engineer to join the Web team on a 9‑month fixed term contract covering a period of maternity leave. This is a front‑end‑focused role, building and improving various STV Player web applications.

You’ll work on consumer‑facing applications that must work well at scale, as well as various in‑house applications such as our Content CMS, interfacing with our backend APIs and working with other engineers across the wider team.

Working and collaborating with PMs, QA, UX and other engineers you will help provide feedback on designs, build and deliver features end‑to‑end, as well as provide ongoing support once in production.

You will own the services you work on end to end – helping product management and engineering leadership define the requirements and architecture, through to supporting the services running in production.

What you’ll work with

  • React and Next.js web applications
  • Component library and Figma designs
  • Automated testing (jest and cypress)
  • Logging, metrics and observability to understand real‑world performance

About you

We’re looking for candidates with at least 2-3 years of professional software engineering experience and:

  • Knowledge of software architecture and design patterns. You have an understanding of how to build and structure applications, particularly consumer facing web apps.
  • An eye for detail and quality. High level of organisationalability and attention to detail working to strict deadlines, with a self‑starter, solutions focused approach. You have strong debugging and optimization skills, and can effectively use unit testing, monitoring and observability tools to build a solid product.
  • Strong communication skills. You enjoy working in a team and collaborating with colleagues in other roles such as UX, Product Management and QA. You have excellent verbal and written communication skills and choose the correct collaboration medium for the task at hand.

It would be great if you also had:

  • Experience of using Test Driven Development and Cypress automated testing.
  • Experience using Continuous Delivery tools to rapidly deploy changes to production.
  • Experience of monitoring and optimising the applications performance.
  • Strong evidence of team working, supporting and sharing knowledge with team members.
  • Knowledge of logging and metrics to help you determine if changes have been successful.
  • Experience working with APIs and CDN caching.
