An exciting opportunity has arisen for an Assistant Producer to join the STV News team based in Glasgow. The Assistant Producer is central to the smooth-running of our newsroom and the delivery of trusted and memorable stories across all platforms. Core responsibilities include producing content for News at Six and running the live newsgathering desk on a regular basis. You’ll prioritise breaking stories, co-ordinate assigning and organising reporters, organise live coverage for digital and broadcast, edit scripts and packages, and contribute across production and newsgathering as required. This role is focused on developing and sourcing content across an integrated newsroom. Your story ideas and treatments should be compelling, engaging and distinctive - shaping and leading the news agenda in Scotland across all STV News platforms. The Assistant Producer will work closely with reporting teams to deliver original journalism on TV, radio, YouTube, our news website & app and social media channels.
KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Work closely with producers, reporters and output editors to develop compelling stories for use on all platforms.
- Support the producer on News at Six to output the nightly news programme.
- Assist the busy newsgathering desk to deliver great content across all platforms.
- Offer editorial insight and direction to reporters and production journalists.
- Run the newsgathering live desk shift, as key cover.
- Participate in forward planning to ensure an appropriate mix of diary and off-diary stories are available across all our platforms.
- Support the production of STV Radio news bulletins.
- Establish effective communication with reporters and producers to identify and develop stories, work-up new leads and angles and take ownership for ongoing/running stories.
- Develop and maintain a strong contacts base across a range of sectors to quickly source information, confirmations and contributions.
SKILLS & EXPERIENCE:
- Demonstrable journalistic experience with a proven track record of working in a fast-paced news environment across a range of media platforms.
- A highly developed news sense, with demonstrable experience of handling major breaking news stories, development of original news features and delivering agenda-setting journalism that is engaging and accessible to STV audiences across distribution platforms.
- Demonstrable knowledge and understanding of the Scottish news agenda and STV audience needs.
- Depth of understanding of the law in Scotland as it affects journalism and the regulatory frameworks that cover our output.
- Evidence of developed understanding and successful delivery of a content-led and multi-skilled approach to news output.
- Strong communication, interpersonal and team working skills to liaise effectively with colleagues, internal and external contacts at all levels.
- Excellent IT skills with experience of working with CMS.
