About the Role

Academic English Tutors primarily deliver high‑quality learning opportunities in English Language and Academic Skills to students on Study Group’s Academic and English Skills (AES) modules as well as on the University of Bath’s pre‑sessional and in‑sessional English courses. Timetabled teaching hours for a full‑time Tutor will be up to 25 hours per week. Tutors work as part of an academic team at the International Study Centre (ISC) to ensure the effective delivery of teaching programmes in line with Study Group’s Learning, Teaching and Assessment Strategy. They also contribute directly to student support and to the development and implementation of innovative teaching practices across the centre, and are involved in designing, developing and producing teaching and learning materials across a range of modules or within a subject area.

Teaching, Learning and Assessment

  • Plan, prepare for and deliver high‑quality teaching sessions that follow an agreed module specification and scheme of work.
  • Develop and update course materials, including for the Virtual Learning Environment (VLE).
  • Prepare and administer formative and summative assessment according to module specifications and the needs of individual students and groups.
  • Mark assessments and provide meaningful, developmental feedback to individual students.
  • Monitor academic progress of individual students and groups, and report progress according to agreed processes and timelines.
  • Prepare and distribute student academic progress reports to students and stakeholders.
  • Provide academic guidance and support to students.
  • Develop and promote student activities to enhance student engagement and experience.
  • Support delivery of induction, orientation and registration programmes.

Academic Management

  • Participate in regular meetings and administrative tasks, contributing to the overall management of learning, teaching and assessment activities.

Quality and Standards Assurance and Enhancement

  • Follow and implement quality assurance procedures, including contributing to on‑going and annual module, course and programme reviews.
  • Maintain accurate, up‑to‑date records of student attendance and performance in accordance with company policy and regulatory requirements.
  • Participate in regular CPD and scholarly activities to ensure an understanding of and application of sector‑wide best practice.
  • Participate in peer observation activities, including reviewing own practice and development needs as a result of peer observation feedback.

About You

  • TEFL, CELTA or equivalent teaching qualification.
  • A Bachelor’s degree in a relevant subject area; a Master’s qualification is normally essential for teaching on pre‑masters programmes.
  • A DELTA qualification is particularly welcomed.
  • Experience of teaching in UK higher or further education and preferably experience with international students.
  • Ability to deliver high‑quality teaching sessions that support student progress to, and achievement of, agreed attainment levels.
  • A student‑centred approach, with evidence of effective feedback and support for all students and groups.
  • Ability to develop and update teaching materials and preferably experience working within a Virtual Learning Environment.
  • Competence in teaching and administrative IT skills (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, e‑mail, etc.).
