Purpose of Role
The Student-led Action Coordinator sits within the Democracy and Student Action Department at SUBU.
The department is responsible for democratic participation and developing a culture of collective action from BU students, empowering them to shape the Union and act on the issues that affect their lives.
The team supports students to turn their ideas and interests into action by supporting campaigns, creating opportunities for them to influence change, and ultimately becoming student activists.
This role will support the development of different mechanisms to facilitate activism, advocacy, and collective engagement within student democracy; supporting students to understand the value in that and having their voice heard.
The role will support projects, initiatives, and campaigns on issues that matter to the students, with the aim of influencing decision‑making at local, institutional, and national levels.
The Student-led Action Coordinator will provide specific support to Student Officers by equipping them with the skills, resources, and opportunities to mobilise around shared interests and communities.
They will offer training and practical support to provide them with all the tools required to be effective change agents.
They will also facilitate student leadership meetings to support effective, insight‑driven discussion.
The role will also play a pivotal part in the coordinating the administration of the core democratic functions of the Union, meaning organisation and attention to detail are vital.
This will include administering student elections, coordinating meeting schedules/agendas/minutes, and maintaining governance records, democratic procedures and constitutional documents.
- Key Tasks
- Administration Duties: email & diary management, preparing meeting agendas and packs, minute‑taking.
- Communication Duties: verbal and written communication between students, Student Officers and Leaders, stakeholders, SUBU staff, University staff, and other external contacts.
- Organisational Duties: organising projects, events and meetings, prompting staff and students for engagement and input.
- Data Duties: maintain and manage various records and information systems.

Duties: leading, supporting or contributing to a variety of projects, campaigns, activities or initiatives as directed by student needs, with a key focus on the organisation of all Students’ Union elections.
- Analytical Duties: collecting feedback formally and informally to review and update processes to enhance engagement and reduce barriers to participation.
- Key Union Events Duties: assist with the organisation and administration of the larger Union events such as Freshers, Summer Ball, Student Awards.
- Representation/ facilitation
Duties: represent SUBU at BU committees, meetings, events as and when appropriate which will include some evening and weekend hours to be agreed with your line manager.

Duties: supporting and advising Union Officers projects, campaigns and events, including pledges, priorities and ad‑hoc campaigns and ensuring direct report is supported.
Assist and lead on delivery of training for our democratically elected officers and representatives.

Duties: contribute to and implement operational plans and departmental objectives by developing strategies to increase students’ engagement with Democracy and Campaigns.
- Research duties: work with the outcomes from student data to develop standing campaigns which are worked on by officers and student representatives, keeping informed of sector wide trends.
- Reviewing & Evaluation
Duties: participate in SUBU strategic planning and development sessions, ensuring all areas of engagement reflect SUBU, monitor the impact, outcomes, and success of all SUBU campaigns and democratic functions.
- Engagement duties: provide a strong area of focus and support to encourage student engagement, ensuring that the democratic and campaigning functions of the Union have a strong presence on campus.
- Networking Duties: maintain strong relationships and partnerships with the University, local community organisations, other Students’ Unions and other relevant stakeholders.
- Democratic
Duties: providing administrative support for elections and other democratic functions, ensuring that all democratic processes are transparent, operating in accordance with the Union’s governing documents and all other relevant policies.

- Key Union events duties: proactively assist with the organisation and administration of Union events such as Fresher’s Fair and the Summer Ball.
