Head of Coverage: Property, Casualty and Crisis Management, London

Are you an experienced insurance lawyer looking for a high impact leadership role with a global broker? Are you aiming to leverage your legal experience in a commercial and international setting? We are seeking to recruit an experienced Insurance Lawyer for a newly created role as Head of Property, Casualty and Crisis Management Coverage.

This is a new and unique role in the London market which offers a varied and fascinating position at the cutting edge of the Property, Casualty and Crisis Management world. This is a hybrid role, based in our London office with the flexibility to work, for a proportion of the week, virtually.

This newly created position will sit within the existing Coverage and Insurable Risk team in the Global Broking Centre in London, supporting the Property, Casualty and Crisis Management ("PCCM") team. The Coverage and Insurable Risk Team is made up of a number of Coverage Specialists, most of whom are qualified insurance lawyers. The team services the Broking teams in London who, in turn, are serving Network Offices around the world. The role of the team is to ensure best in class insurance coverage for our clients, both at an Aon product level and on a bespoke basis for individual clients.

It will be essential for the candidate to be an insurance lawyer with significant experience, including in relation to property insurance and casualty insurance. This will include experience of:

  • insurance and reinsurance policy terms and conditions
  • interpretation of insurance and reinsurance policy wordings and the ability to draft clear policy language
  • insurance product design and drafting
  • the legal and regulatory context in which global insurance programmes are placed
  • reinsurance used as part of the structuring of global insurance programmes
  • designing and delivering training on key issues relating to insurance policy coverage
  • experience of considering current issues in these lines of business; an example is the terms of business interruption cover.

Given the variety of lines of business placed by PCCM, we are looking for solid experience of insurance law generally, including in relation to property insurance and casualty insurance. The successful candidate will be supported by at least one other team member who will be dedicated to the PCCM team. People management experience will be a requirement of the role.

What the day will look like

This is a new role and, in the first instance, will involve developing (in conjunction with the Head of the Coverage and Insurable Risk Team) a strategic plan for supporting the PCCM team with their various needs and building a team to deliver this. At the outset, the work will be limited to key strategic projects.

Ultimately, the team will support the PCCM team by:

  • Providing specialist input on matters relating to the terms of the insurance cover placed for Aon's clients
  • Advising clients and network offices on terms of cover in conjunction with the Broking team
  • Negotiating with underwriters on individual placements in conjunction with the Broking team
  • Drafting and negotiating the terms of the cover provided under Aon facilities
  • Assisting in the design and implementation of new insurance products
  • Providing training to the Broking teams on coverage issues
  • Developing Aon's stance on market developments and interacting with market bodies such as Lloyd's and the LMA
  • Coordinating with coverage specialists around the Aon network to ensure an Aon United approach
  • Cooperating with the Claims team on significant coverage issues arising in active claims
  • Remaining up to date with all legal and regulatory developments impacting insurance coverage and the context within which it is sold and ensuring that the Broking teams are supported accordingly.

How this opportunity is different

The successful candidate will join a small but vibrant team which sits at the heart of the business in the Global Broking Centre, advising Brokers and clients on real-time issues. The successful candidate will report to Helen Chapman, the Head of the Coverage and Insurable Risk Team and will sit on the PCCM Leadership Team. This is a Hybrid role which will allow for some home-based working, although the successful candidate will need to be in the office at least 50% of the time.

The PCCM Team

The PCCM team, led by Helene Madell, is a team of 250+ individuals, placing in excess of $3 billion of annual premium into the London and international markets for clients located in 120 countries. The team's lines of business include:

  • North American Property
  • International Property
  • US Casualty
  • International Casualty
  • Digital Economy
  • Environmental Liability
  • Healthcare and Life Sciences
  • Terrorism and Political Violence
  • Life, Accident and Health
