Brighton College is seekingto appoint a Health and Safety Advisoron a full-time, permanent basis.

Reporting to

Deputy Head of Health and Safety

Main purpose of the role

The post-holder will help coordinate, facilitate, manage, train, and promote the continual improvement of health and safety awareness within the College.

The successful candidate will be keen to develop their Health and Safety experience in a challenging and high-performing environment, with the potential to take on additional responsibilities and career progression.

Health and Safety Advisor General Duties and Responsibilities

  • Undertake internal and external property inspections around college estate as per the H&S Inspection Programme - to include Fire Safety inspections (Fire Foor inspections, Fire Risk Assessments) and boarding accommodation.
  • Regularly assist with traffic and pedestrian safety management support around estate – dealing and communicating with the residents, the community and stakeholders.
  • Coordinate with current contractors and source new ones to schedule, arrange, and oversee both regular and reactive maintenance work.
  • Chaperoning contractors onsite who are not DBS registered.
  • Administration support such as minute taking, scanning documents, photocopying, answering phones and responding to emails.
  • Coordinating all DSE assessments and follow up actions with staff.
  • Organise and communicate with necessary department heads regarding the annual Health and Safety staff practical training programme – ensuring excellent course attendance, participation, engagement and feedback.
  • Manage the Health and Safety E-learning training database & matrix (i HASCO).
  • Responsible for the compiling, interpretation, presenting and dissemination of the termly accident report.
  • Assist the Deputy Head of H&S with the on-going risk assessment annual review cycle and feedback.
  • Assist the Deputy Head of H&S with the annual policy review cycle, ensuring that such policies are accurate and reflective of operations.
  • Manage Co SHH and administration – research the possibility of introducing software to assist with this.
  • Responsibility and accountability for writing and reviewing risk assessments.
  • Propose, and with the agreement of the Deputy Head of H&S, implement changes to working practices and policies to comply with legislation.
  • Provide enhanced/advisor level Health and Safety advice & guidance to colleagues and Heads of Department in accordance with current legislation – being confident and assured with such advice.
  • Procurement and monitoring of Health and Safety equipment and supplies.
  • Maintenance and up-keep of Health and Safety notices/signage.
  • Health and Safety record keeping and report writing including accident and incident investigations.
  • Defects reporting on specific software and corrective action (Flow 360).
  • Attend and chair meetings in the absence of the Deputy Head of H&S.
  • Carry out new and expectant mother risk assessments and follow up actions.
  • Be highly visible and involved around college.
  • Undertake research on areas at the request of the Head of H&S and Security and/or the Deputy Head H&S.
  • Carry out any other reasonable duties as requested by the Deputy Head of H&S or the Head of H&S and Security.
  • Health and Safety Advisor Person Specifications

The successful candidate will have experience in the following areas

  • Demonstrate a good knowledge of safe working practices.
  • Experience of working on own initiative and effectively prioritising a busy and demanding workload
  • Knowledge of the principles and application of GDPR
  • Full driving licence - to travel around the College estate.
  • Excellent written and spoken communication skills e. g. the ability to adapt communication according to setting or person.
  • Energetic and positive approach to work.
  • Solution focused.
  • Ability to make things happen - comfortable with enforcing / re-enforcing rules and conflict resolution.
  • Excellent diplomatic and listening skills but ability to be assertive and robust when required.
  • Innovative with the ability to think out of the box.
  • Experience of working on own initiative and effectively prioritising a demanding workload.
  • Experience of working in an environment where the principles and application of Safeguarding are paramount.
  • Health and Safety Advisor Qualifications and Experience

The successful candidate will either have completed training or be willing to undergo training in the following areas:

  • Educated to Level 3 qualification or equivalent, ideally in a relevant subject e. g.

Health and Safety (Nebosh Certificate or Diploma, Nebosh certificate in Fire Safety, conducting fire risk assessments, fire door inspections, property management, business administration.

  • IOSH Qualification.

Hours of Work

Monday to Friday, 8.30m to 5.00pm with a 60-minute unpaid lunch break (37.5 hours per week).

Occasionally, there may be a need to work outside of regular working hours, including weekends, to support events such as Open Mornings, as required in which time in lieu will be given.

Further conversations will take place at interview, with regards to agreed working arrangements.

Remuneration

A salary in the range of £29,000 - £32,000 per annum will be offered depending the successful candidate's skills and experience.

Holidays

23 days, plus bank holidays increasing to 28 days plus bank holidays after 2 years of service.
