Role Overview

As a senior team member, the Engineering Manager will protect the company’s financial health, uphold strict health and safety standards, and support the delivery of geotechnical projects. The role requires a chartered geologist, civil engineer or environmental scientist with at least 15 years of experience in the UK ground‑investigation industry and a strong commercial mindset.

Key Responsibilities

  • Implement the company’s business planning, strategy and action principles.
  • Review current operations and identify opportunities for development and growth.
  • Oversee and control project budgets and invoicing.
  • Steward health and safety in line with company standards and help Directors monitor well‑being.
  • Provide input into pay and promotion decisions across the business.
  • Ensure staff receive training, development and advancement opportunities.
  • Uphold company policies and procedures and lead by example.
  • Analyse market trends, forecast commercial performance, set financial targets and maximise invoicing.
  • Build and nurture client relationships with support from Business Directors and the marketing team.
  • Ensure compliance with recognised technical standards, guidance and legislation for tendering, delivery and project completion.
  • Lead and support staff across the engineering teams.
  • Price and review major project tenders.
  • Monitor company KPIs.
  • Disseminate knowledge and new information through briefings, internal training, guidance documents and email updates.

Direct Responsibilities

  • Overall management of SSL’s Glasgow office.
  • Business development in Scotland.
  • Recruitment within the Glasgow office.
  • Development of factual reporting teams.
  • Coordinate consistent adherence to SSL engineering procedures.
  • Contract sign‑off.
  • Project management for major contracts.
  • CAPEX applications.

Support

Mentoring and support will be provided by the company’s directors, the Commercial Manager and other senior leaders.

Key Performance Indicators

  • Sales: after 6 months, expect at least ÂŁ2.1 M per annum; billing and WIP reported monthly.
  • Profitability: average at least 15 % across all contracts.
  • Marketing: promote SSL services to potential clients at least once per week, with records passed to the Business Development Manager.
  • Training: all Scottish engineers trained appropriately and records maintained.
  • Project completion: all contracts finished by the client‑specified deadline.
  • Project reviews: six per year.
  • Site inspections: six per year.
  • Staff wellbeing: six noteworthy events per year.

Salary and Benefits

Salary commensurate with experience. 31 days annual leave (including Bank Holidays), rising to 36 for extended service. Life insurance, pension scheme and free private GP service.
