Role Overview

Our client is a well-established principal contractor specialising in cladding remediation and regeneration projects across Great Britain.

They are looking for an experienced Structural Engineer to provide specialist support across temporary works design, structural assessments and wind-loading calculations.

You will be responsible for reviewing and approving temporary works designs, assessing how scaffolding and other temporary structures affect existing buildings, and ensuring all work meets current industry standards and safety regulations.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead temporary works design reviews, verification and approval across multiple projects.
  • Carry out wind-loading calculations in accordance with BS EN 1991-1-4.
  • Assess wind loads across building elevations, façade zones, recesses, projections and other complex building features.
  • Review scaffold loads and assess their impact on existing buildings, foundations, podium roofs, external areas and low-level structures.
  • Calculate and specify spreaders, base plates and load-transfer arrangements for scaffolding and construction hoists.
  • Review temporary hoardings, welfare facilities, site accommodation and temporary access systems.
  • Produce and verify TG20:21 scaffold compliance sheets.
  • Prepare structural calculations, drawings, specifications and supporting technical documentation.
  • Complete designer risk assessments in accordance with CDM Regulations 2015.
  • Identify design risks and clearly communicate any residual risks to the relevant project teams.
  • Ensure temporary works designs comply with BS 5975:2019, PAS 8812:2016, Building Regulations, the Building Safety Act and relevant HSE guidance.
  • Provide technical support during the installation, inspection and removal of temporary works.
  • Attend site visits, inspections and key stages of construction when required.
  • Liaise with clients, consultants, architects, manufacturers, Building Control and internal project teams.
  • Maintain clear digital records and support the Golden Thread of Information throughout each project.
  • Support and mentor junior engineers where required.

Essential Requirements

  • BEng or MEng in Civil Engineering or Structural Engineering.
  • Chartered Engineer status with ICE or IStruct E.
  • Minimum five years’ structural engineering experience.
  • At least three years’ experience working with temporary works.
  • Strong knowledge of BS 5975:2019.
  • Strong knowledge of PAS 8812:2016.
  • Good understanding of CDM Regulations 2015 and designer responsibilities.
  • Detailed experience carrying out wind-loading calculations for complex buildings.
  • Experience assessing scaffolding loads, load paths and structural effects on existing buildings.
  • Proficiency with structural analysis software such as STAAD. Pro, SAP2000 or Robot Structural Analysis.
  • Strong Auto CAD skills.
  • Competent user of Microsoft Excel, Word and Outlook.
  • Current professional-level CSCS Black Card.
  • Ability to manage several projects and priorities at the same time.
  • Strong analytical, technical and problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent attention to detail.
  • Clear written and verbal communication skills.

Desirable Experience

  • Experience within cladding remediation or façade engineering.
  • Knowledge of scaffold design software and TG20:21 guidance.
  • Understanding of geotechnical considerations relating to temporary works.
  • CITB Temporary Works Coordinator certification.
  • MSc in Temporary Works and Construction Method Engineering.
  • Experience using Revit, BIM or Common Data Environment platforms such as Asite.
  • Previous experience in both design-office and site-based engineering roles.
  • Experience delivering value-engineered or innovative temporary works solutions.
