A senior Design Manager is required to lead a growing technical team within a well-established renewable energy business delivering high-spec residential and commercial projects. This is a key hire and a true “plug and play” role – taking full ownership of the design function post-sale, leading from the front, and acting as the technical authority across the business.

This business has been operating for over 15 years, delivering high-end renewable and M&E solutions across the South East. They specialise in heat pumps, solar PV, MVHR, and full building services packages, working with leading developers, architects, and contractors. With over 2,500 projects delivered, they are now entering a strong growth phase as part of a wider group.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead and manage a team of 3 design engineers, reviewing outputs and maintaining high standards
  • Take full ownership of design delivery from post-sale through to installation
  • Produce detailed Stage 4 designs across heat pumps, solar PV, MVHR, and M&E systems
  • Manage design workflow, prioritising workload and ensuring deadlines and SLAs are met
  • Act as the main technical point of contact for installation teams and site queries
  • Work closely with clients, architects, and consultants on D&E projects
  • Carry out heat loss/gain calculations and room-by-room analysis
  • Develop system schematics, layouts, and technical specifications
  • Implement and improve BIM processes aligned with RIBA stages
  • Drive continuous improvement across the design function alongside senior leadership

Requirements

  • Strong experience designing renewable energy systems (heat pumps essential)
  • Background working with architects, consultants, or developers
  • Proven ability to lead or mentor a design team
  • Strong understanding of BIM and RIBA design stages
  • Proficient with design software (AutoCAD, Revit, IES, EasyPV or similar)
  • Solid knowledge of UK building regulations and renewable standards
  • Able to communicate technical detail clearly to both technical and non-technical stakeholders
  • High attention to detail – designs must be buildable and snag‑free
