We are seeking experienced Offshore Seabird Observers/Surveyors to support seabird monitoring activities in an offshore wind farm area. The primary role involves collecting occurrence and behavioural data of seabirds through boat surveys. This is a field-based role, predominantly offshore, and will consist of periodic 6-day survey campaigns (12 surveys in total) over a two-year period. Successful candidates will be selected from a pool of seabird identification specialists who meet the qualifications and competencies outlined below.
Key Responsibilities
- Offshore seabird surveys: Participate in offshore seabird surveys, following standardized protocols and methodologies.
- Record detailed observations of seabird species, including: Identification, behaviour, flight patterns, and spatial distribution. Estimation of bird counts, flight heights, trajectories, and distances using tools such as rangefinders.
- Ensure data quality: Maintain consistency and accuracy in all field observations and data entry.
- Collaborate with the field team: Support safe and efficient operations onboard.
Qualifications
- Degree in Environmental Science, Biology, or a related field – Preferential.
- Based in the United Kingdom – Preferential.
- Demonstrated experience conducting offshore seabird surveys.
- Strong identification skills for North Atlantic seabird species.
- Excellent attention to detail and the ability to remain focused under variable environmental and operational conditions.
- Physically fit and capable of working onboard vessels, including in adverse weather conditions.
- Strong visual acuity, essential for detecting seabirds at sea or in flight.
- Fluent in English, with strong written and verbal communication skills.
- Valid OEUK Medical Certificate (formerly OGUK) – Preferential.
- Valid GWO Basic Safety Training certificate – Preferential.
- Proficiency in seabird survey techniques: bird counting, flight height estimation, and distance assessment.
- Knowledge of marine biodiversity monitoring tools and technologies.
