Our client is a leading 3PL, with an envied client base and turnover exceeding £25 million. Due to a period of growth, they now require a Transport Controller to control their night shift at their hugely impressive facility in Staffordshire on a Monday to Friday basis (2100hrs to 0600hrs).

Key Responsibilities as Transport Controller:

  • Take full ownership of the night trunking operation ensuring service targets are achieved.
  • Allocate trailers and resources appropriately for the following day's operation, maintaining fleet readiness.
  • Ensure all night drivers arrive on time, are properly briefed, and that any attendance issues are addressed promptly.
  • Manage trailer load departures, resolving driver or vehicle issues quickly to maintain on-time performance.
  • Work closely with warehouse teams to ensure all freight is loaded throughout the night and departures remain on schedule.
  • Oversee local fleet loading, ensuring vehicles are prepared and ready to leave the depot on time to achieve next-day deliveries.
  • Plan and prepare next-day local deliveries using TMS and planning tools.
  • Collate driver paperwork and digital devices ready for the following day's routes.
  • Maintain strong communication with the day planning team through a comprehensive written and verbal handover, ensuring all overnight issues and decisions are clearly captured.
  • Monitor and support night drivers, responding to live operational issues, breakdowns, or delays.
  • Provide a calm and professional point of contact for customers and partners during overnight hours.
  • Ensure all operations run safely, efficiently, and within compliance standards.
  • Proactively identify operational improvements that enhance service and reduce cost.

Ideal Person for the role of Transport Controller:

  • Previous experience in a transport planning or control role, ideally within a 3PL environment.
  • Strong working knowledge of transport systems (TMS, telematics, routing software).
  • Excellent IT skills - Microsoft Office, Outlook, Teams, and Windows-based platforms.
  • Good geographical knowledge of the UK road network.
  • Ability to remain calm under pressure and make confident decisions in real time.
  • Clear and effective communication with drivers, warehouse teams, and management.
  • Strong sense of accountability and pride in service performance.
  • Commercial awareness - understanding efficiency, cost control, and utilisation.
  • Self-motivated and able to work independently through the night shift.
