Strive are a UK wide Supply Chain & Logistics management recruiter. Our client is a leading FMCG Distribution business, who are currently recruiting for a Head of Workshop (VMU) at their head office in Lancaster. As Head of Workshop you will ensure that the Company’s Distribution and Vehicle Fleet operation is legal & compliant, organised, monitored and controlled efficiently. The Head of Workshop (VMU) is accountable for a National Fleet of over 150 vehicles and 160 trailers with a 24/7, 365 days operation, therefore a flexible approach to hours will be required.

Duties of the Head of Workshop (VMU) include but are not limited to:

  • Leading, Managing and motivating a team including managing attendance, productivity and conduct
  • Setting and monitoring achievement of team KPIs for National Fleet Operations
  • Building an own fleet and customer focused team environment
  • Managing a team of 40 Maintenance Technicians
  • Improve existing and further develop office-based work processes and procedures
  • Monitor and minimise all areas of costs by receiving and inputting data efficiently and applying strict controls on all expenditure in-line with set budgetary targets
  • Awareness of expenditure issues and formulating professional working relationship with all suppliers
  • Monitor Distribution Department policies and procedures relating to vehicle maintenance and maximising vehicle utilisation
  • Consistently monitor OCRS maintenance system to identify the strengths and any weakness within the vehicle maintenance operation
  • Responsible for maintaining all legalities, Health & Safety and HACCP controls in accordance with rules and procedures within the Vehicle Maintenance Department
  • Ensuring adequate staffing and contractor levels to maintain the Company standards and legal obligations throughout the vehicle maintenance operation
  • Oversee the investigation of all accidents/defects and take action as appropriate and that any suspicious incidents are reported to the Directors and Operational Management
  • Regularly auditing National Fleet to ensure compliance and legal requirements
  • Representing the National Fleet department at meetings

The Ideal Candidate for Head of Workshop (VMU):

  • Excellent knowledge of EU legislation, VOSA & DVSA regulations
  • Managing external 3rd party contracts
  • Procurement of vehicles and trailers / Tenders for suppliers
  • Recognised Apprenticeship in HGV Mechanics (e.g. City & Guilds)
  • Technical ability to understand, support and diagnose vehicle defects/problems
  • Experience of IRTE and Scania working procedures and systems/processes
  • Leadership in processes to ensure Audit status is maintained
  • Experience of managing budgets
  • Excellent People Management skills
