Non-Executive Director – Social Work England

Job for a non‑executive director to serve on the Board of Social Work England. The appointment will support the organisation’s strategy, provide fiduciary oversight, challenge and contribute to management decisions, and promote high standards of social work regulation.

Responsibilities

  • Provide strategic and constructive challenge and ideas to the Board.
  • Exercise fiduciary responsibility and safeguard public interest.
  • Contribute to decision‑making and governance of the organisation.
  • Engage positively with a diverse range of stakeholders, including public, practitioners, and people with lived experience.
  • Support the implementation of key government reform in children’s and adult social care.
  • Participate in Board and relevant committee meetings, including the Audit and Risk Assurance Committee.

Qualifications & Experience

  • Demonstrated knowledge of the role of a non‑executive director and ability to set direction and engage in constructive debate.
  • Experience in analysing complex issues, identifying risks and developing mitigation strategies.
  • Commitment to fiduciary responsibility, acting in best interests of the profession and of people with lived experience.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with people with lived experience of social work and those at the margins of society.
  • Expertise in at least one of the following areas:
  • Digital strategy, data management and analytics (including deriving insights and trends).
  • Commercial experience.
  • Educational experience – strategic development of professional educational models (beyond health and social care).
  • Senior financial management, accounting and audit expertise.
  • Chairmanship of an Audit and Risk Assurance Committee.
  • Knowledge of internal controls, risk management and governance systems.
  • Relevant professional qualifications such as CIPFA, ACCA, CIMA or legal memberships.

  • Up to 25 days of board engagement per year, plus an additional 5 days for the ARAC Chair.
  • Flexibility around start dates, with expected start in April or May 2025.
