We’re looking to appoint up to three lay Council members and one registrant Council member. Join our Council and influence our work, delivering high performing and forward-looking regulation underpinned by strong data, collaboration and compassion. Council members play a key part in setting strategy and policy for the HCPC and ensuring that public protection is at the heart of everything that we do.
We are a UK-wide regulator of 15 different health and care professions, including paramedics, radiographers, occupational therapists, and biomedical scientists. Our aim is to protect the public. To do this, we regulate by:
- deciding what it takes to be a member of one of our professions;
- approving education programmes which will produce competent graduates who are safe to treat people;
- keeping an accurate register of people who are legally able to call themselves one of our 15 professions;
- taking action when a professional isn’t meeting our expectations of safe practice and conduct.
This is complex and requires good governance. The Council is our governing body, our equivalent of a board. It sets our strategic direction and oversees our performance.
About the Council member role: Lay members must not be eligible to be, or have ever been, a registrant with the HCPC. Registrant members must be HCPC registered at the point of application.
In summary, the role of a Council member is to:
- contribute their knowledge and expertise to Council to ensure robust governance and effective, strategic decision-making;
- contribute to the delivery of the Council’s objectives and strategy;
- ensure that they have a good working knowledge of the HCPC’s role, key processes, and other information that may help them in their role;
- carry out their work for the Council in accordance with the Council’s members’ code of conduct and the HCPC’s values;
- act as an ambassador for the HCPC, representing the Council to stakeholders.
Council members receive an annual allowance of £13,000, plus travel and subsistence expenses. The time commitment required for this role is approximately 30 days per year.
