Our client is a leading provider of comprehensive building services and construction solutions, specialising in delivering high-quality projects across various sectors, including healthcare, commercial, residential, education, and industrial.
On behalf of our client, we are seeking an experienced Design Manager to oversee the design and coordination of MEP fit out and construction/refurbishment projects, inclusive of specialist services within the healthcare sector. The successful candidate will be responsible for managing the entire design process from tender stage through to project completion, ensuring that all systems and construction activities meet the rigorous standards required in healthcare environments.

Key Responsibilities:
- Evaluate and contribute to the development of design concepts, ensuring alignment with client needs and project objectives.
- Collaborate with the pre-construction team to prepare comprehensive design packages, including MEP systems, specialist services, and construction/refurbishment scopes.
- Ensure designs are cost-effective, technically sound, and meet all project specifications.
- Work closely with clients, architects, consultants, and contractors to clarify design requirements and expectations.
- Present design proposals to stakeholders, incorporating feedback to refine the approach.
- Lead the detailed design development for MEP systems, specialist services (e.g., medical gas systems, HVAC for cleanrooms), and construction/refurbishment works.
- Coordinate with consultants and specialists to finalise specifications and integrate designs with architectural and structural components.
- Manage the submission of design packages for necessary approvals and certifications.
- Identify opportunities for cost savings and efficiencies without compromising quality, safety, or compliance.
- Implement value engineering solutions and monitor their impact on project budget and timelines.
- Develop detailed design schedules, milestones, and deliverables in coordination with the project management team.
- Oversee the integration of MEP systems, specialist services, and construction/refurbishment activities during the build phase.
- Provide technical guidance to site teams, resolving design-related issues and ensuring seamless coordination between trades.
- Conduct regular site inspections to ensure all installations and construction work adhere to design specifications and quality expectations.
- Manage design changes during the construction/refurbishment phase, assessing their impact on cost, schedule, and compliance.
- Oversee the preparation and delivery of final as-built drawings, O&M manuals, and other handover documentation for MEP systems, specialist services, and construction elements.
- Ensure documentation is complete, accurate, and meets client and regulatory requirements.
Key Skills and Competencies:
- A minimum of 5 years of experience in design management, with a focus on MEP and construction/refurbishment projects in the healthcare sector. (Our client will also consider candidates with experience in education & commercial projects).
- Proficient in relevant design and project management software (e.g., AutoCAD, Revit, BIM).
- Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to lead and collaborate effectively with multidisciplinary teams.
- Proven ability to manage multiple projects and meet deadlines under pressure.
- Problem-solving skills and a proactive approach to managing design and construction challenges.
