The successful candidate will have a strong background in civil engineering and construction, with experience preparing competitive and commercially robust estimates for a range of civil engineering and groundworks projects. This is an excellent opportunity for an experienced Estimator looking to join a well-established, family-run construction business, working on a varied range of projects across Cumbria and the wider area. You will be responsible for preparing accurate tenders and quotations from initial enquiry through to submission, working closely with our commercial, operational and project teams to ensure our bids are both competitive and deliverable. Key Responsibilities Review and assess incoming tender opportunities and enquiries. Analyse drawings, specifications, schedules and other tender documentation. Prepare detailed and accurate estimates for civil engineering and construction works. Obtain and analyse quotations from subcontractors and suppliers. Prepare material, plant, labour and subcontractor costings. Produce Bills of Quantities and pricing schedules where required. Undertake take-offs and measure quantities from drawings and specifications. Identify project risks, exclusions, assumptions and opportunities. Liaise with clients, consultants, suppliers and subcontractors during the tender process. Work closely with the Project and Operations teams to ensure estimates reflect practical construction methodologies. Assist with developing construction programmes, preliminaries and project resource requirements. Prepare competitive and commercially viable tender submissions. Maintain accurate records of tender information and pricing. Attend tender meetings and site visits where required. Support the handover of successful tenders to the commercial and project delivery teams. Identify opportunities for value engineering and alternative construction solutions. Contribute to the continuous improvement of estimating processes and procedures.About You We are looking for someone who is commercially aware, organised and confident working independently, with a strong understanding of civil engineering and construction. Essential: Previous experience working as an Estimator within the civil engineering or construction industry. Strong understanding of civil engineering and groundworks. Ability to interpret construction drawings, specifications and tender documentation. Experience carrying out quantity take-offs and preparing detailed cost estimates. Experience obtaining and assessing supplier and subcontractor quotations. Good understanding of construction methods, materials, plant and labour requirements. Strong numerical and analytical skills. Excellent attention to detail. Ability to work to deadlines and manage multiple tenders simultaneously. Good communication and negotiation skills. Competent with Microsoft Office, particularly Excel.Desirable: Experience estimating for highways, infrastructure, groundworks, utilities or public-sector projects. Experience with NEC contracts and other forms of construction contract. Experience working with Bills of Quantities and Schedule of Rates. Experience using estimating or construction software. Relevant qualification in Quantity Surveying, Civil Engineering, Construction or a related discipline.We are open to discussing full-time, part-time or self-employed arrangements for the right candidate, providing flexibility around working hours and the individual's preferred working arrangement.
