My client is seeking an experienced Senior Transport Planner to join a busy and well-established transport operation in Stockport. This is a key role within the operations team, responsible for planning and coordinating a general haulage fleet while ensuring compliance, efficiency, and strong commercial performance across both rigid and articulated vehicles.
Key Responsibilities
- Plan and allocate transport resources effectively to ensure smooth daily operations and maintain service levels.
- Adjust transport plans in response to operational changes, delays, or unexpected issues.
- Communicate clearly with drivers regarding job allocations, updates, and end-of-day debriefs.
- Build and maintain strong relationships with customers, always ensuring a high level of service.
- Identify and develop opportunities to work with new customers and approved sub-contractors.
- Make sound commercial decisions when allocating work to sub-contractors.
- Ensure all vehicles and equipment are scheduled correctly and remain compliant with legal requirements.
- Accurately update and maintain transport management system (TMS) records.
- Work closely with internal departments to support smooth and efficient operations.
- Provide out-of-hours support on a rota basis via telephone.
- Carry out general administrative duties to support the wider team.
- Strong understanding of driver hours and transport compliance regulations.
- Good geographical knowledge of the UK road network.
- Confident communicator, both written and verbal.
- Strong organisational skills with the ability to manage changing priorities.
- Comfortable working under pressure in a busy environment.
- High attention to detail and accuracy in all aspects of work.
- Competent IT skills, including Microsoft Office and transport systems.
- A team player who can also work independently when required.
- Ability to build strong working relationships with drivers, customers, and suppliers.
