The Company Stream is on a mission to bring better financial wellbeing to frontline workers. We partner with some of the world's most recognised employers to give their teams access to fairer financial services, all built around flexible pay. Millions of people can now choose how often they're paid, track their shifts and earnings, start saving, use budgeting tools, get free financial coaching, and access fairer financial products, all through one financial wellbeing platform. Stream is unique: VC-backed and growing at scale-up pace, but with a social conscience. We're a certified B Corp.

As we continue to scale, we need our People Operations to scale with us. This is a role at the heart of our People team, built for someone who is as comfortable in the detail of a payroll run as they are thinking about how AI and automation can transform how we operate. You'll take ownership of payroll, ensuring it runs with precision and care every month, while also bringing a sharp, analytical eye to how we can continually improve our people processes and leverage technology to do more, smarter.

You'll sit within the People team, reporting into the Head of People, and work closely with our Finance team on payroll. You'll collaborate across the business on systems, process, and operational improvements, and be part of a small, high-impact People team that punches well above its weight.

What will you be doing?

  • Payroll ownership: Take full ownership of payroll processing end-to-end, working closely with our Finance team to ensure every payroll run is accurate and on time, and acting as the go-to expert for all payroll-related queries across the business.
  • Process optimisation: Identify inefficiencies in our people processes and lead on improvements, from documentation and standardisation to automation, always with an eye on scalability.
  • AI and systems: Champion the use of AI tools and our HRIS to streamline People Operations, exploring what's possible and building smarter workflows that free up time for higher-value work.
  • HRIS management: Serve as the primary administrator of our HRIS, maintaining data integrity, generating insightful reports, and driving adoption across the business.
  • Policies and compliance: Support the review, update, and communication of people policies, ensuring they remain current, compliant, and clearly accessible to all employees.
  • Broader People Ops: Roll up your sleeves across a range of People Ops tasks including onboarding coordination, benefits administration, and supporting the wider People team on projects as the business evolves.

What experience might you have?

Must-haves

  • Payroll expertise: Demonstrable hands‑on experience managing payroll end-to-end, with a solid understanding of PAYE, statutory payments, and payroll compliance.
  • Process and systems mindset: Proven ability to identify operational inefficiencies and drive improvements, with practical experience using HRIS platforms and a genuine curiosity about how technology (including AI) can enhance people processes.
  • HR generalist knowledge: A solid grounding in employment law and HR best practice, with experience operating in a People Ops or HR generalist capacity.
  • Precision and reliability: A track record of managing complex, deadline-driven processes with accuracy, particularly in environments where getting the details right really matters.
  • Collaborative and self-sufficient: Comfortable working both independently and cross-functionally, building trust with Finance, People, and other teams with ease.

Can-be-learnts

  • Experience with specific HRIS platforms (we can get the right person up to speed on our stack)
  • Benefits administration, particularly in a multi-jurisdiction context
  • Prior start-up or scale-up experience

This role is for you if...

  • You're happiest when you're getting things done: You don't wait for the perfect process to exist before you start. You figure it out, you ship it, and you improve it as you go.
  • You're as comfortable in the detail as you are in the big picture: You can nail a payroll run without errors and then spend the afternoon thinking about how to redesign the process entirely.
  • You think AI and automation are genuinely exciting: Not just as buzzwords, but as real tools that can change how a small team operates.
  • You're scrappy and resourceful: You've worked in environments where headcount is lean and the to-do list is long.
  • You take ownership: When something is yours, it's really yours. You proactively flag problems, propose solutions, and follow through.
  • You're energised by mission: The idea that the work you do every day helps a business that genuinely improves people's financial lives? That matters to you.

What does success look like?

Within 1 month you'll have...

  • Taken a thorough handover of our payroll process and successfully completed your first payroll run
  • Got to grips with our HRIS and begun identifying quick wins for data hygiene or system improvements
  • Built relationships with key stakeholders across People, Finance, and Operations

Within 3 months you'll have...

  • Owned multiple payroll cycles with confidence and full accuracy
  • Mapped our core People Operations processes and produced a prioritised improvement roadmap
  • Identified at least one AI or automation opportunity and begun prototyping a solution

  • Delivered meaningful process improvements that the wider team can feel
