We are seeking an experienced and motivated
Senior Highways Engineer to join our clients growing infrastructure team in Birmingham.
This is an excellent opportunity to lead the design and delivery of a diverse range of highways and transportation projects across the Midlands and wider UK.
As a Senior Highways Engineer, you will play a key role in managing projects from concept through to construction, providing technical leadership, mentoring junior engineers, and working closely with clients, local authorities, and multidisciplinary teams.
Responsibilities
- Lead the design and delivery of highway infrastructure projects.
- Prepare and review highway designs, technical reports, specifications, and drawings.
- Manage projects to ensure delivery on time, within budget, and to the required quality standards.
- Provide technical expertise in highways engineering, including highways geometry, junction design, drainage coordination, and road safety considerations.
- Liaise with clients, local authorities, contractors, and stakeholders.
- Mentor and support graduate and junior engineers.
- Undertake design reviews and ensure compliance with relevant standards and legislation.
- Contribute to business development activities, including proposal writing and client engagement.
- Support project managers with resource planning and project delivery.
Requirements
Essential
- Degree qualified in Civil Engineering or a related discipline.
- Significant experience in highways design and engineering.
- Strong knowledge of UK highway design standards, including DMRB, Manual for Streets, and local authority requirements.
- Proficiency in relevant design software such as Civil 3D, Auto CAD, or equivalent.
- Experience managing projects and coordinating multidisciplinary teams.
- Excellent communication and stakeholder management skills.
- Full UK driving licence.
Desirable
- Chartered Engineer status (CEng) or actively working towards chartership with ICE or CIHT.
- Experience delivering Section 38, Section 278, and development-led infrastructure schemes.
- Knowledge of active travel, public realm, and sustainable transport projects.
- Project management qualifications and experience.
