STRABAG UK are seeking an ambitious Health & Safety Manager to help deliver our contract for the Strategic Rail Freight Interchange (SRFI) at SEGRO Logistics Park Radlett.
Your contribution to our company: This is an excellent opportunity to lead Health, Safety and Wellbeing within a high-performing project team in the growing Build Sub-Division. The HSW Manager will take overall responsibility for driving a strong HSW culture and performance across the project, based at Radlett, supporting a diverse portfolio of works including self-delivery, civils, earthworks, and roadworks. Seeking a self-driven, impact-focused individual with strong project team leadership and management skills.
Project Overview: Located at the former Radlett Aerodrome site in Hertfordshire, SEGRO Logistics Park Radlett will deliver a state-of-the-art rail freight terminal complete with extensive distribution warehouses and over 600 acres of enhanced green space. The development aims to shift freight transportation from road to rail, significantly reducing carbon emissions and road congestion. Construction is anticipated to take place over the next three years. The scheme also promises numerous community and environmental benefits, including biodiversity net gain, employment and training opportunities, and integrated transport improvements.
Requirements:
- Lead the delivery of a high-performing Health, Safety and Wellbeing culture across the project including embedding the STRABAG Better Together programme.
- Provide strategic HSW leadership, advice, and guidance to operational and management teams and supply chain partners.
- Take ownership of HSW input into the planning and delivery of works, ensuring risks are identified, assessed, and effectively controlled.
- Oversee the development, review, and implementation of Safe Systems of Work (SSoW), including RAMS, ensuring they are suitable, sufficient, and consistently applied.
- Drive the reduction of risk through effective planning, design influence, and implementation of robust control measures.
- Lead and ensure implementation of site monitoring activities including inspections, audits, and assurance, ensuring clear reporting and timely close-out of actions.
- Establish and oversee assurance programmes, supporting delivery teams in effective implementation.
- Lead and support incident investigations, ensuring root cause analysis is robust and that corrective and preventive actions are effectively implemented.
- Oversee the development of HSW communications including toolbox talks, briefings, campaigns, and investigation reports.
- Ensure effective management and governance of HSW data, driving accurate and timely reporting of performance metrics and qualitative feedback.
- Analyse data trends to identify risks, opportunities, and areas for continuous improvement, informing strategic decision-making.
- Engage with workforce, supervision, and leadership teams to promote a positive HSW culture and visible leadership. Challenge unsafe behaviours and support a just and learning culture across the project.
- Lead and support the delivery of HSW briefings including occupational health and wellbeing initiatives.
- Build and maintain strong relationships with stakeholders at all levels, influencing and driving high standards of performance.
- Collaborate across the HSW function and wider organisation to share learning and embed best practice.
- Escalate significant HSW risks and issues to senior management, providing clear recommendations and solutions.
- Contribute to the development and continuous improvement of HSW systems, procedures, and standards across the business.
- Ensure the competence and development and support of the HSW team, including mentoring and coaching of advisors.
- Maintain professional competence, including relevant qualifications and professional membership.
Skills & Qualifications:
- Health and Safety Degree or Diploma - or equivalent UK experience with UK HSW qualification relevant to construction.
- Proven experience in construction Principal contractor role with experience of self-delivery and supply chain management in civils.
- Chartered Member of IOSH or working towards Accident Investigation training.
- Strong knowledge of applicable UK regulatory and industry standards.
- Computer literate with a good working knowledge of Microsoft Office.
- Strong communication, data analytics and presentation skills.
- Experience/Knowledge and interest in HSW technology, digitalisation and AI implementation and development.
- Experience with earthworks and highways works.
- Leadership and Management Training.
