Overview of the Senior Commercial Manager role at STRABAG UK. A new challenge in Industrial & Logistical Build Construction to help shape the future of STRABAG.
Responsibilities:
- Efficiently manage all commercial aspects of the portfolio of projects and maintain regular liaison with all stakeholders.
- Set structure, roles, responsibilities and competencies to deliver project commercial management services efficiently.
- Build a high performing team, manage onboarding, develop personal plans, set objectives and monitor progress.
- Actively coach and mentor as necessary.
- Delegation of appropriate work to direct reports whilst maintaining accountability.
- Identify training needs and implement structured development for commercial practitioners.
- Promote a culture of contractual & commercial awareness within the portfolio and instil a Strabag culture.
- Ensure commercial team adheres to group procedures and governance.
- Contribute to business plan strategy.
- Develop and implement a clear commercial strategy across the portfolio and influence tender commercial strategy.
- Review contractual obligations and commercial risks.
- Ensure contracts are administered correctly and on time through regular meetings to review contract administration, change control, design management, risk and opportunities and contract payment mechanisms.
- Maximise cash position including WIP control, cash flow production & improvement plans for all projects.
- Engage in work winning duties, proactive release of team members and attendance at client presentations and tender interviews.
- Identify recoveries from insurance policies and prosecute entitlement.
- Attend monthly project reviews to interrogate portfolio performance and take action.
- Engage pre‑construction and operational delivery team members in project handover process.
- Manage and influence strategy in relation to client and subcontractor disputes where appropriate.
- Support and advise on contractual insurances, bonds, warranties and parent company guarantees.
- Influence and support management of project supply chain.
- Identify, mitigate and manage risk & opportunities for the portfolio.
- Active management of the work winning process, allocation of resource to commercial elements, liaise with pre‑contract commercial resource.
- Attend reviews with Executive Team to explain portfolio performance.
- Ensure contract conditions negotiated within key risk parameters set by Group Legal.
- Ensure compliance with year‑end audit requirements.
- Ensure portfolio achieves planned objectives & targets.
- Promote optimum performance and margin gains through efficiencies and effective risk management.
- Monitor out‑turn cost and value on projects and maintain detailed forecasts monthly.
- Support main contract, sub‑contract and consultant final accounts where necessary.
- Undertake other work as required by Commercial Director.
Qualifications:
- Understanding of programming techniques and project controls.
- Leadership skills; computer literate with strong skills in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint).
- Commercially astute with substantial proven experience within a commercial role in the construction industry, experience within a building main contractor.
- Expert knowledge of Standard Forms of Contract and Standard Methods of Measurement.
- Strong understanding of JCT and NEC contracts.
Corporate Development:
- Maintain schedule of client engagement events for customer feedback, alignment and future pipeline.
- Suggest group‑wide business initiatives and implement local improvements.
- Serve as face of Strabag for external engagement at industry events.
- Share appropriate information within the Group across business units working with the same client.
- Participate in preparation and implementation of new group commercial procedures.
- Carry out commercial audits on other areas of the business as required.
- Contribute to functional leadership and business improvement initiatives.
