The Coating Technician is responsible for preparing and cleaning surfaces prior to carrying out painting applications. This role involves abrasive blasting, surface preparation, the application of protective coatings, and detailed reporting. The technician will work to ensure that surfaces are properly prepared for new coatings, following all COSHH safety protocols, project risk assessments/method statements, and manufacturer instructions.
Key Responsibilities
- Surface Preparation & Blasting: Use abrasive techniques to prepare surfaces (steel etc.) for coating application. Safely operate various types of preparation equipment to remove old coatings, contaminants, or corrosion from surfaces. Ensure that the surface is properly cleaned and free of debris to ensure the best adhesion for coatings.
- Coating & Painting: Prepare and apply protective coatings or paints to surfaces after blasting, ensuring even application and proper coverage. Select appropriate coating materials based on surface type, environmental conditions, and project specifications. Apply coatings using spray guns, brushes, or rollers, ensuring high-quality finishes and long-lasting protection for structures. Perform inspections and touch-ups of coatings to guarantee they meet specified thickness, uniformity, and performance standards.
- Safety Compliance: Adhere to all safety protocols, including the use of personal protective equipment (PPE), when performing preparation and coating application. Ensure that all operations are conducted in a controlled environment to minimise exposure to dust and debris, complying with environmental regulations. Handle and dispose of materials, chemicals, and waste in compliance with environmental and safety regulations.
- Quality Control & Documentation: Inspect and assess surfaces after blasting and painting to ensure that the work meets the quality standards and project requirements. Maintain detailed records of work performed, including surface preparation methods, materials used, and inspection results. Report any issues or concerns regarding surface conditions, coatings, or Chartex removal to supervisors and project managers.
- Maintenance & Equipment Care: Perform routine maintenance on blasting and coating equipment to ensure optimal performance. Ensure that all equipment is stored and handled properly to prevent damage or misuse. Regularly clean and inspect tools, machinery, and safety gear to ensure readiness for use on the job site.
Qualifications
- Education: Valid industry recognised qualification in coating preparation and application.
- Experience: Previous experience in industrial blasting, painting, or surface preparation (required). Experience with various coating and fireproofing application methods (preferred).
- Certifications: Industry recognised qualification in coating preparation and application. OEUK Medical and Chester Step GWO Basic Safety Training GWO Enhanced First Aid Valid RWE Competent Persons Training Certificate.
- Skills: Strong understanding of surface preparation, blasting techniques, and coating applications. Attention to detail and the ability to perform precise, high-quality work. Ability to work safely with hazardous materials, chemicals, and equipment. Ability to follow instructions and project specifications to meet required standards. Strong communication skills for reporting issues and coordinating with team members.
