About Tech Against Terrorism

Tech Against Terrorism aims to save lives and prevent harm by disrupting terrorist activity online while upholding human rights, combining open-source intelligence investigations with sophisticated technical tooling and capacity-building for governments and tech platforms. The organisation works closely with the United Nations, democratic governments, tech companies, and civil society, and its Open-Source Intelligence (OSINT) team underpins threat analysis, specialist services, and training delivered to partners worldwide. Our flagship technical product is the Terrorist Content Analytics Platform (TCAP), a secure alerting and analytics system that detects and verifies terrorist or violent extremist content online and notifies platforms so it can be reviewed and removed. Since launch, TCAP has alerted a large and growing number of technology companies to tens of thousands of pieces of terrorist content, and now also provides a curated archive and hash-sharing capability to support research, moderation, and disruption efforts.

The Role

We’re looking for a Threat Intelligence Analyst who will play an integral part in our client’s proactive OSINT investigations into terrorist and violent extremist use of the internet and their 24/7 incident and crisis alerting system. Our client’s investigations and alerts are leveraged by the global tech industry, national governments, and supranational organisations to maximise their understanding of how terrorists and violent extremists use the internet - and how to counter it.

Key Responsibilities

  • Monitor, investigate and analyse emerging terrorist and violent extremist activity online through open-source intelligence work, following our OPSEC and incident response procedures and using your expertise in best-practice OSINT approaches and tooling.
  • Respond in real time to ongoing and emerging terrorist incidents with an online component and alert them to tech platforms and relevant national authorities, including through the use of the client's platform.
  • Produce short-and-long-form analytical reports based on our findings, including using data from the client's database.
  • Lead on strategic projects and initiatives to disrupt terrorist and violent extremist use of the internet and provide capacity building support to tech platforms and governmental actors.
  • Collaborate on projects as part of our cross-functional team of OSINT, research and policy analysts, developers and engineers, and communications team.
  • Contribute to our client’s outreach and fundraising efforts by putting forward proposals for strategic work and advocating for partnerships with our broad network of stakeholders.
  • Liaise with and provide support to a variety of relevant stakeholders, including tech platforms, regulators, governmental agencies and intergovernmental organisations.
  • Represent our client’s work at high level conferences, and influential strategic stakeholder engagements online and offline.
  • Actively contribute to the further development of the client’s innovative technical approaches to online counter terrorism work and strategic priorities in response to the emerging and changing threat picture, as well as actively developing our OSINT capabilities.

Required Experience and Skills

  • Demonstrated experience and thorough understanding of terrorist/extremist use of the internet.
  • At least two years of experience in open-source intelligence (OSINT) work and thorough knowledge of best practice tools and techniques, including adherence to wellbeing and operational security procedures.
  • Professional experience in dealing with graphic, violent, and/or otherwise distressing content.
  • Professional experience in working in a crisis, incident response or alerting framework.
  • Knowledge and understanding of terrorist and violent extremist use of online spaces.
  • Experience in working with incidence response protocols.
  • Excellent intelligence writing skills and proven experience with analysing and describing complex findings according to intelligence standards.
  • Passion for and commitment to our client’s mission to save lives by disrupting terrorist and violent extremist use of the internet and upholding human rights.
  • Right to work and residency in Australia and ability to work fully remotely.
  • Willingness to travel occasionally, including internationally.
  • Willingness to work flexibly as part of an international team based in the UK and Australia and as part of an on-call rota, including at weekends and public holidays.
  • Degree in relevant field.

Personal Qualities

  • Problem solving and adaptability: You are solution oriented and innovative in how you approach challenges and blockers. You have a flexible attitude and a high degree of personal accountability.
  • Organisation, time management and attention to detail: You are well organised and are able to work on multiple projects simultaneously to a very high quality, prioritising effectively.
  • Strong team player: You thrive on working as part of a close-knit team. You proactively seek solutions to problems in a constructive and collaborative manner and apply your skills and expertise where and when needed.
  • Ownership and proactiveness: You proactively take ownership of projects and work streams, resolve blockers proactively and successfully drive projects through to completion.
  • Analytical and innovative mindset: You identify gaps in existing processes and suggest improvements by regularly bringing new ideas.
  • Communication: You have excellent written and verbal communication skills, and you communicate effectively and diplomatically with both colleagues and external stakeholders.
  • Sound judgement and diligence: You are able to make decisions with sound judgement, especially in stressful situations and under pressure, remaining calm and collected.
  • Resilience: You are aware of your own wellbeing in the context of work and are able to respond to challenges with appropriate mitigation strategies.

This role would be suitable for people within but not limited to the following fields:

  • Counterterrorism within law enforcement / government
  • GSOCC
  • Cyber Threat Intelligence
  • Public or private sector intelligence
  • Journalism

Important note

This role will require regular work with graphic violent and/or otherwise distressing content. Our client has policies and practices in place to mitigate against the effects of this work and to support our team in dealing with its effects, including operational security and wellbeing SOPs, and access to specialist professional counselling and therapy services. This role also requires regular on-call availability outside of core business hours, including on weekends and public holidays, which is remunerated with an on-call allowance and TOIL.

Benefits

  • AUD70,000-80,000 per annum, plus on-call allowance of equivalent of a day rate per day on call on weekends and public holidays. Time worked while on call is given back with Time Off In Lieu x1.
  • 30 days annual leave plus public holidays.
  • Generous monthly training and development or conference budget to help you up-skill (AUD1000 a month).
  • Flexible working to support families and varying needs.
  • Friendly and supportive culture with all the benefits of working with private sector stakeholders while advancing the goals of an NGO.
  • Top tier private healthcare and wellbeing support.
