The IT Engineer is an experienced technical support engineer responsible for resolving escalated IT issues and helping to maintain secure, reliable, and effective IT services across the organisation. The role is primarily hands-on and technical, acting as an escalation point for service desk issues across endpoints, infrastructure, networks, applications, and cloud services. The postholder is expected to investigate problems independently, take ownership through to resolution, and elevate appropriately where specialist or management input is required. Operating within a defence and security-conscious environment, the IT Engineer will also support the IT and Security Manager with operational information security and compliance activities, including ISO 27001, Cyber Essentials, security controls, audit evidence, access management, vulnerability remediation, and related security tasks. Accountability for IT strategy, information security governance, compliance frameworks, and management decisions remains with the IT and Security Manager.
Key Responsibilities:
- IT service desk management, incident resolution, troubleshooting, and SLA-driven support across end-user and business systems.
- Windows endpoint administration, device deployment, software installation, user provisioning, and lifecycle management.
- Infrastructure support covering servers, networks, cloud platforms, identity services, and end-user computing environments.
- System monitoring, patch management, software updates, vulnerability remediation, and secure configuration management.
- Information security operations including security monitoring, incident response, access management, and implementation of security controls.
- Compliance and governance support for ISO 27001, Cyber Essentials/Cyber Essentials Plus, DCC requirements, audits, risk remediation, and ISMS activities.
- Technical documentation, asset and licence management, process improvement, automation, and service reliability enhancement.
Skills & Experience:
- Strong practical experience in a second-line IT support, infrastructure support, or similar hands-on technical role.
- Proven ability to troubleshoot and resolve complex technical issues independently and take ownership through to resolution.
- Good working knowledge of Windows endpoints, Microsoft 365 / cloud services, identity and access management, networking, and general systems administration.
- Experience supporting business IT infrastructure, endpoint management, patching, software deployment, and user administration.
- Good understanding of information security principles and secure IT administration practices.
- Working knowledge of ISO 27001, Cyber Essentials, security controls, audit evidence, or compliance activities is desirable; the role does not require ownership of these frameworks.
