We are currently recruiting for an experienced Small Tools Fitter / Stores Supervisor to join our Plant Services team based at our Birmingham Depot. We are looking for someone who embodies our values of being hard‑working, grounded and proud of the work they do.

The Role

Working as part of a small, enthusiastic team, you will be responsible for the safe, efficient and profitable supply, maintenance and hire of small plant, tools and consumables supporting our Rail and Plant divisions. Your role will be hands‑on and varied, combining workshop activity, stores supervision and customer service. You will carry out planned maintenance, inspections, testing and breakdown repairs on the company’s small plant and tools, both in the workshop and on site, while also overseeing hire processes, stock control and compliance. A background in tool hire fleet maintenance and hire desk operations would be particularly well suited to this role.

Key Responsibilities

  • Inspection, servicing and repair of small plant and equipment
  • PAT testing and equipment certification
  • Ensuring servicing schedules are adhered to and kept up to date
  • Carrying out routine safety inspections
  • Managing hire and return processes, including quarantine and servicing priorities
  • Ensuring all equipment is fit for purpose and compliant with statutory testing and safety standards
  • Issuing tools, consumables and PPE to site and clients
  • Managing stock levels and stores operations
  • Processing hire contracts and maintaining accurate records for audit and HSE purposes
  • Maintaining high standards across stores, yard and quarantine areas
  • Promoting HSQE compliance and safe working practices
  • Ensuring 5S / Lean principles are consistently applied
  • Delivering efficient, high‑quality customer service
  • Building strong relationships with internal and external customers
  • Identifying opportunities to improve processes, efficiency and service delivery

To be successful in this role, you will have:

  • Relevant mechanical qualifications or experience
  • Experience within the tool hire industry and associated working practices
  • Able to work to statutory regulations and standards
  • Proven supervisory experience
  • Experience working on small plant and equipment such as generators, stone saws and power tools
  • Excellent organisation, time management and attention to detail
  • Strong communication, interpersonal and customer service skills
  • IT confidence using MS Office, Outlook and plant hire systems
  • A process‑driven mindset with knowledge of Lean / 5S principles
  • Ability to work under pressure and to deadlines
  • A valid driving licence

Desirable (but not essential)

  • PAT testing certification
  • CAT4+ training
  • Safety training in abrasive wheels, manual handling and forklift truck operation
