Retail Accountant
North Hertfordshire | 6–8 Week Temporary Assignment
£24.00 – £26.00 per hour

StormX Recruitment is supporting a well-established and independent business within the building supplies and merchanting sector with the appointment of an experienced Retail Accountant on a temporary basis.
This is an immediate opportunity for an experienced finance professional to join a busy, transactional environment for an initial 6–8-week assignment.
The successful candidate will ideally have previous experience within building supplies, builders' merchants, timber, construction materials, wholesale, distribution or another stock-intensive trade environment.
The Role
Working closely with the wider finance and operational teams, you will take ownership of a range of commercial and transactional accounting activities, with a particular focus on stock, margins, sales and branch accounting.
Key responsibilities will include:
- Reconciling daily POS and trade counter takings
- Reviewing sales, customer accounts and cash transactions
- Managing supplier rebates and customer discounts
- Stock and inventory reconciliations
- COGS and gross margin analysis
- Investigating stock variances, discrepancies and adjustments
- Supporting month-end accounts and branch P&Ls
- Journals, accruals, prepayments and balance sheet reconciliations
- Supporting VAT returns
- Overseeing AP matching and high-volume supplier invoices
- Supporting AR, credit control and aged debt
- Cash flow forecasting
- Supporting stock counts and wider finance requirements
The Ideal Candidate
We are particularly interested in candidates who have hands-on accounting experience within a building merchant, trade, wholesale, distribution, retail or stock-intensive environment.
You will ideally have experience with:
- Inventory and stock accounting
- Gross margin and cost of sales analysis
- Supplier rebates
- Branch or trade counter accounting
- High-volume transactional environments
- AP and AR
- Month-end reporting
- ERP and/or POS systems
- Strong Excel skills
AAT, ACCA or CIMA qualification is advantageous, but relevant sector experience and the ability to hit the ground running are more important for this temporary assignment.
Assignment Details
Duration: 6–8 weeks
Location: North Herts
Working: Fully on-site
Hours: Monday–Friday, 7.00am–5.00pm
