Shift: Night Shift (5:00 PM - 5:00 AM)

Schedule: This position works a 12-hour rotating schedule, typically: 4 days on / 3 days off, alternating weekly schedule, one week includes built-in overtime.

Position Summary

The Melt Operator is responsible for operating and maintaining a plasma arc furnace used in specialty metal melting and casting processes. This role involves monitoring furnace operations, performing equipment setup, troubleshooting, preventive maintenance, and ensuring safe, efficient production. Successful candidates will have strong mechanical aptitude, the ability to learn technical processes, and a commitment to safety and quality.

Essential Responsibilities

  • Furnace Operations
    • Follow all standard operating procedures and safety guidelines
    • Perform pre-operational inspections and startup checks
    • Set up and operate plasma melting furnace systems
    • Load raw materials and prepare furnace charges
    • Monitor vacuum, plasma, and helium systems during operation
    • Establish and adjust furnace settings, including torch patterns
    • Monitor gauges, meters, instrumentation, and video systems
    • Perform melting, casting, and ingot unloading operations
    • Maintain accurate production logs and operating records
  • Equipment Maintenance
    • Perform routine furnace cleaning and maintenance
    • Change molds, hearths, shields, feed devices, and other components
    • Conduct vacuum system testing and leak detection
    • Troubleshoot furnace and auxiliary equipment issues
    • Assist with maintenance on electrical, hydraulic, pneumatic, cooling, and vacuum systems
    • Use hand tools and power tools safely and effectively
  • Material Handling
    • Operate forklifts, overhead cranes, and other material handling equipment
    • Handle heavy rigging, piping, and production materials
    • Maintain organized work areas and housekeeping standards

Qualifications

  • Required
    • High school diploma or GED
    • Strong mechanical aptitude and troubleshooting ability
    • Ability to learn technical processes and equipment operation
    • Basic math skills and ability to follow detailed instructions
    • Ability to read and interpret operating procedures and technical documents
    • Ability to work independently and as part of a team
    • Ability to work weekends, holidays, overtime, and rotating schedules as needed
    • Ability to wear a respirator
    • Ability to lift up to 35 pounds
    • Ability to work in confined spaces and industrial environments
  • Preferred
    • 2+ years of manufacturing, industrial, furnace, maintenance, welding, or mechanical experience
    • Furnace, melt shop, foundry, casting, or metals manufacturing experience
    • Trade school training or technical certification
    • Forklift and overhead crane experience
    • Welding, soldering, fabrication, or maintenance experience

Work Environment

This position works in an industrial manufacturing environment and may involve exposure to heat, dust, fumes, and airborne particles, working around heavy machinery and moving equipment, standing, walking, bending, climbing, and lifting throughout the shift, working in hot and physically demanding conditions, and exposure to loud noise levels.
