Setup Technician β Day Shift
Location: Salisbury, NC 28144
Pay: $20.00β$25.00 per hour
Shift: Day Shift | 5:00 AMβ5:00 PM
Schedule
This position works a 12-hour rotating schedule, typically:
- 4 days on / 3 days off
- Alternating weekly schedule
- One week includes built-in overtime

Position Summary
The Setup Technician is responsible for setting up, operating, monitoring, and maintaining plasma melting furnaces and related production equipment used in specialty metal melting and casting processes.
This hands-on role involves equipment setup, material preparation, furnace operation, monitoring, data logging, troubleshooting, preventive maintenance, and ensuring safe and efficient production.
The ideal candidate will have strong mechanical aptitude, the ability to learn technical processes and technologies, and a strong commitment to safety and quality.
Essential Responsibilities
Furnace Setup & Operations
- Follow all standard operating procedures and safety guidelines
- Learn and apply vacuum, plasma, and helium technologies
- Perform pre-operational inspections and startup checks
- Set up and operate plasma melting furnace systems for melting and casting
- Load raw materials and prepare furnace charges
- Set up molds, hearths, shields, feed devices, and related components
- Perform furnace pump-down and monitor systems throughout operation
- Establish and adjust furnace settings, including torch patterns
- Monitor vacuum, plasma, and helium systems during operation
- Monitor gauges, meters, instrumentation, and video systems
- Perform melting, casting, and ingot unloading operations
- Maintain accurate production and operating records
- Complete required data logging throughout the melting and casting process
Equipment Maintenance & Troubleshooting
- Perform basic furnace maintenance and routine cleaning
- Change molds, hearths, shields, feed devices, and other furnace components
- Perform vacuum system testing, leak detection, and basic troubleshooting
- Troubleshoot furnace and auxiliary equipment issues
- Assist with maintenance on electrical, hydraulic, pneumatic, cooling, and vacuum systems
- Use hand tools and power tools safely and effectively as required
- Identify equipment issues and communicate problems to maintenance or production leadership
- Follow established maintenance and equipment procedures
Material Handling
- Operate forklifts, overhead cranes, and other material handling equipment
- Handle heavy rigging, piping, raw materials, and production components
- Safely load and unload materials and finished ingots
- Maintain organized work areas and housekeeping standards
- Follow proper material handling and safety procedures
Qualifications
Required
- High school diploma or GED
- Strong mechanical aptitude and troubleshooting ability
- Ability and willingness to learn technical processes, furnace operation, and specialized technologies
- Basic math skills and ability to follow detailed instructions
- Ability to read and interpret operating procedures and technical documents
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team
- Ability to work weekends, holidays, overtime, and rotating schedules as needed
- Ability to wear a respirator
- Ability to lift up to 35 pounds
- Ability to work in confined spaces and industrial environments
- Ability to safely use hand and power tools
Preferred
- 2+ years of manufacturing, industrial, furnace, maintenance, welding, or mechanical experience
- Furnace, melt shop, foundry, casting, or metals manufacturing experience
- Trade school training or technical certification
- Forklift and overhead crane experience
- Welding, soldering, fabrication, or maintenance experience
- Experience with vacuum, plasma, or industrial furnace technologies
Work Environment
This position works in an industrial manufacturing environment and may involve:
- Exposure to heat, dust, fumes, and airborne particles
- Working around heavy machinery and moving equipment
- Standing, walking, bending, climbing, and lifting throughout the shift
- Working in hot and physically demanding conditions
- Exposure to loud noise levels
- Working around industrial furnace and casting equipment
- Working around electrical, hydraulic, pneumatic, cooling, and vacuum systems
