Are you an experienced Environmental Health Officer or Qualified Food Safety Specialist looking to lead an ambitious, high-profile regulatory team in London? An established London local authority is seeking an experienced Food Safety Team Leader to manage a team of 11 officers (including EHOs and administrative support) delivering critical statutory food law enforcement functions and protecting public health across the borough.

Key Responsibilities

  • Team Management & Delivery: Oversee a team of 11 officers, managing performance, allocating workloads, and ensuring the food hygiene and standards inspection programme meets Food Law Code of Practice targets.
  • FHRS Management: Lead the delivery of the Food Hygiene Rating Scheme, including regular FSA data uploads, handling appeals, and processing right-to-reply submissions.
  • Technical Guidance & Enforcement: Provide expert technical advice across food law, review legal cases, oversee statutory notice serving, and manage formal enforcement actions including prosecutions and Hygiene Emergency Prohibitions.
  • Service Quality: Maintain unit policies and procedures, ensuring rigorous evidence standards, record-keeping, and compliance with national standards.

Key Requirements

  • Qualifications: Higher Certificate in Food Control (Mandatory) and EHRB registration (Mandatory). A BSc/MSc in Environmental Health is desirable.
  • Technical Experience: Extensive, recent local authority experience in food hygiene and food standards inspections, FHRS operations, serving statutory notices, and handling complex enforcement cases.
  • Enforcement & Court Skills: Proven track record in preparing prosecution cases and exercising formal/informal enforcement powers; experience with Hygiene Emergency Prohibition Notices and Court appearances is highly preferred.
  • Leadership: Experience supervising or managing regulatory staff, with strong communication skills and the confidence to handle complex service requests and difficult conversations.
