I am currently working alongside a local authority based in Surrey with the recruitment of an experienced Private Sector Housing Officer for an initial 3-month contract. This is a great opportunity to join a proactive Private Sector Housing team and play a key role in improving housing standards and bringing empty properties back into use.
The Role
In this position, you will manage a varied caseload across private sector housing, with a focus on housing standards, enforcement, and empty homes work. Duties will include:
- Conducting HHSRS inspections and assessing housing conditions
- Investigating complaints relating to disrepair and poor housing standards
- Supporting HMO inspection, licensing, and enforcement activity
- Preparing and serving statutory notices in line with legislation
- Monitoring compliance and progressing enforcement action where required
- Identifying empty properties and engaging with owners to bring them back into use
- Advising landlords, tenants, and owners on housing standards and repairs
- Assisting with case preparation for legal proceedings or tribunals
About You
The successful candidate will demonstrate:
- Previous experience within Private Sector Housing in a Local Authority setting
- Strong knowledge of housing legislation, including the Housing Act 2004 and HHSRS
- Experience carrying out property inspections and assessing defects
- Understanding of enforcement processes and statutory notices
- Ability to manage an independent caseload effectively
- Strong communication and organisational skills
