Overview

Our client – a leading, major international shipping operator based in London – is looking for an experienced, forward-thinking Vessel Manager to join their innovative, high-performing team.

Responsibilities

  • Accountable for 6-8 Container Ships. The successful candidate will be an adept, fluent leader who understands (and can explain in interview) the complexities of assuring the technical availability of a mixed container fleet (different sizes, equipment, engines) trading globally.
  • Combine the technical competence and experience gained at sea with a progressive, transparent and effective leadership style developed in subsequent shore management roles.
  • Build a trusted, two-way relationship with senior management onboard the ships they manage; Operations, QHSSE and other shore functions & stakeholders.
  • Balance multiple, conflicting priorities and be decisive when situations demand.
  • Demonstrate awareness of where, and how, key technical decisions contribute to commercial outcomes.
  • Manage CAPEX and OPEX for assigned vessels. Identify and implement efficiencies while maintaining safety and technical reliability.
  • Develop the competence and capability of senior management and wider crew.

Accountabilities & Deliverables

  • Ensure the technical availability of assigned vessels, prioritising safety, reliability, asset condition and cost competitiveness; monitor performance, troubleshoot faults, identify root causes, and implement corrective actions; oversee scheduled and unscheduled maintenance, repairs, and modifications to hull and machinery; plan inspections and dry-docking activities; ensure compliance with class, flag, and international standards; conduct inspections and vetting assessments; travel globally to visit vessels when required; prepare and deliver detailed daily, weekly and monthly reports; escalate key situations to management as required.
  • Provide effective sea-to-shore leadership and communication, engaging with officers and crews, and developing individuals. Manage onboard staff, and coach and mentor to build capability and competence.
  • Drive continuous improvement and efficiencies: manage budgets (OPEX, CAPEX) for maintenance, repairs, stores, and dry-docking; propose innovative solutions and cost-saving measures; evaluate service quality from shipyards, workshops and suppliers; provide operational insights to enhance safety and efficiency of future vessel designs; contribute to decarbonisation initiatives.

Experience

RELEVANT EXPERIENCE & EDUCATION

  • Sailed to Chief Engineer (C/E), with Container (or Bulk Carrier) experience across a variety of ship sizes and engine types.
  • Subsequently, a seasoned shore-based manager with a minimum of two years of experience overseeing vessel operations, including safety assurance, extensive dry-dock coordination, and demonstrable delivery of efficiencies.
  • Exposure to and understanding of new technologies.

Education

  • Class 1 certification.
  • Degree in Marine Engineering, Nautical Science, or equivalent qualifications.
