Description

Due to rapidlyexpanding needs, an exciting opportunity has arisen for an energetic, patient,and nurturing individual to join our team as a Learning Support Assistant withsome 1:1 support to support a child with special educational needs.

Applications areinvited from an enthusiastic, hard-working LSA who has experience of and apassion for supporting childrens learning in school. The successful candidatewill also have excellent communication and interpersonal skills and hold therelevant qualifications.

The position isa mixed role to support children with a range of learning. If appointed, youwill work alongside a team of teachers and other practitioners to develop anddeliver an appropriate curriculum in line with the childrens needs. You willneed a strong understanding of the Primary curriculum and your experience ofsupporting children will be fundamental to ensure the pupils you support arenurtured, motivated, encouraged to learn and achieve realistic goals, bothsocially and academically.

When workingwith small groups and on a 1:1 basis, you will be building a consistent,trusting relationship with the child(ren), supporting them as they progressthrough the school and moving up through the school with them.

The idealcandidate will have a passion for working with children with additional needsand be committed to providing both educational and basic care support. Thisrole requires someone who is truly patient, nurturing, and dedicated toensuring the childrens overall well-being and development within a supportivelearning environment.

KeyResponsibilities:

To work under the direct instruction of teaching staff, usually in the classroom with the teacher. Provide general support to the teacher in the care of pupils and management of the classroom. Work may be carried out in the classroom or outside the main teaching area. Assist teachers in the following:

Support toTeacher

  • Providestructuredsupport in accordance with specific work programmes designed and supervised by individual teachers
  • Support the teacher in the development and implementation of Individual Education/Behaviour Plans
  • Assist in maintaining classroom discipline through the implementation of the schools behaviour management strategies
  • Provide support to pupils to achieve learning goals, e.g. guided reading.
  • Assist the teacher in monitoring pupils responses to learning activities and accurately record achievement/progress as directed
  • Provide detailed and regular feedback to teachers on pupils achievement, progress, problems etc
  • Undertake appropriate basic admin tasks

Support toPupils

  • Accompany teaching staff and pupils on visits, trips and out of school activities as required
  • Encourage pupils to interact with others and engage in activities led by the teacher.
  • Assist children in matters of personal needs and their general health including first aid and welfare matters
  • Arrange medical/dental visits as appropriate
  • Provide general support to pupils ensuring their safety, by complying with good H&Spractice

Support toCurriculum

  • Assist the teacher in the preparation and development of agreed curriculum activities/materials
  • Provide support in literacy/numeracy/SEN strategies
  • Support the use of ICT in learning activities and develop pupils competence and independence in its use

Support to School

  • Promote and safeguard the welfare of children and young persons you are responsible for or come into contact with
  • Be aware of and comply with policies and procedures relating to child protection, health, safety and security, confidentiality and data protection, reporting all concerns to an appropriate person
  • Ensure all pupils have equal access to opportunities to learn and develop
  • Liaise effectively with teachers/parents/guardians, welfare officers, health visitors and other professional staff as part of the routine consultative process
  • Contribute to the overall ethos/work/aims of the school
  • Attend relevant meetings as required

Providededicated 1:1 support to a child with special educational needs, including autism, ensuring a nurturing and inclusive learning environment.

Assist with the child's daily learning activities, adapting materials and tasks to suit their individual needs and learning style.

Build a strong,trusting relationship with the child to help them feel safe, supported, and understood, fostering their social, emotional, and academic development.

Provide basic care needs, including assisting with toileting, feeding, and personal care when required.

Support the child in their transition through different year groups, moving up through the school alongside them to ensure continuity and stability.

Work closely with the class teacher, SENCO, and other support staff to develop and follow an individualised learning plan tailored to the child's needs.

Use strategies to promote positive behaviour and encourage communication, interaction, and independence.

Monitor the child's progress, keeping detailed records, and providing feedback to the teaching team and parents/carers.

Participate in relevant training and development opportunities to further develop your skills in supporting children with special educational needs.

Previousexperience working with children in schools, particularly children with special educational needs.

A genuine passion for working with children and a desire to support them in a long-term, consistent role.

Ability to provide basic care needs with patience, compassion, and sensitivity.

Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to build positive, long-term relationships with children, staff, and parents/carers.

A proactive, flexible approach and the ability to work both independently and as part of a team.

Basic knowledge of safeguarding and child protection practices.

DesirableQualifications:

  • Relevant qualifications in childcare, education, or special educational needs (e.g., CACHE Level 3, NVQ Level 2/3, or equivalent).
  • Experience with alternative communication methods (e.g., Makaton, PECS) is a plus.
  • First aid training as appropriate (e.g. emergency first aid course).

Knowledge/Skills

  • Understanding of relevant policies/codes of practice.
  • Good understanding of areas of learning, e.g. literacy, numeracy, science, SEN or Early Years.
  • Use of other equipment technology - video, photocopier.
  • Well-developed interpersonal skills to be able to relate well to a wide range of people.
  • Work constructively as part of a team whilst being able to demonstrate initiative.
  • Effective use of ICT to support learning.
  • NVQ Level 3 or recognised equivalent.
