We are retained on a search for a Head of Tax and Treasury to join a well-regarded UK-listed group as the senior leader responsible for group tax, treasury, pensions and R&D tax credits. Reporting to the Chief Financial Officer, the successful candidate will act as partner and guide to a portfolio of specialist operating businesses across the group. The role is mostly tax, with some treasury responsibilities.
The business is founder-led and performing strongly. The centre is deliberately lean: operating companies run their own compliance activity locally, and the group tax and treasury function acts as adviser, challenger and business partner rather than as a controller of local work. The incoming leader will need to be at ease with this model and able to build influence across a decentralised structure without formal authority over local finance teams.
The role
- Lead the group tax function across corporate tax, employment tax, VAT and wider operational taxes, working alongside external advisers on corporation tax.
- Own the group treasury remit, including banking relationships, occasional refinancing, and involvement in capital markets activity as it arises.
- Oversee the company pension scheme and the group's R&D tax credit position.
- Act as the senior tax and treasury business partner to the operating companies, providing challenge, guidance and support to local finance leadership.
- Manage the relationship with HMRC and other tax authorities, and represent the group's interests in tax policy.
- Contribute to the modernisation of the group's tax operating model, including scope to insource elements currently managed externally.
About you
- A broad tax leader with the operating instincts to make a decentralised model work. A narrow single-tax specialist is unlikely to be the right fit.
- Track record of business partnering with commercial and finance leaders without direct authority over them.
- Some exposure to treasury, pensions or R&D tax credits alongside a strong tax core.
- Comfort with a lean central function and a business that expects the centre to make life easier for the operating companies rather than harder.
- Personable, articulate and low ego. Able to explain technical detail credibly without over-complicating it.
- Chartered accountant, chartered tax adviser or equivalent qualification.
