The predicted salary is between 30000 - 30000 £ per year.

Scale 5 (£28,598 - £31,022); 37 hours, Full‑Time (9am‑5pm, evening work and Saturday mornings required); Permanent; Based at Stockport Crematorium, but may support colleagues across the bereavement service within the borough.

Your Role

  • Carry out cremations and associated duties in accordance with the Cremation Act and the Guiding Principles of the Institute of Cemetery and Crematorium Management, including any future amendments.
  • Provide cover for other Bereavement Services employees to allow for flexibility of working.
  • Provide chapel attendant cover in either service chapel as required, liaising with officiants, organists, public and funeral directors; receive funerals; check coffin identification; resolve minor issues in a professional and respectful manner; ensure serious issues are brought to the attention of the management team immediately.
  • Control the service light system; accurately play music and audio systems; supervise the flower display area; close curtains, if necessary; tidy and prepare the chapel for the next funeral; liaise with the music system provider support team.
  • Assist the cemetery teams with duties such as planting, minor landscaping and infrastructure works, weeding, garden and grounds maintenance, salting and snow clearance, leaf clearance, control of litter in the grounds, headstone inspection and burial aid.

About You

We’re looking for a compassionate and reliable Crematorium Technician to join our Bereavement Services team. You will have excellent interpersonal skills, be respectful and approachable when supporting bereaved families, and be able to work both independently and as part of a team. You should be computer literate, have experience working with the public, and ideally possess knowledge of grounds maintenance, administration, and crematorium operations. A keen eye for detail, flexibility, a willingness to learn, and a commitment to maintaining high standards are essential. Previous crematorium experience, maintenance skills, and a Cremation Technicians Certificate of Competence are desirable. The role requires flexibility to work evenings, weekends and other duties on a rota basis as required.
