Your Role

As a Residential Support Worker, you\’ll be a steady, trusted presence in a young person\’s life helping them develop confidence, skills and independence. No two days are the same, but each one makes a difference.

Responsibilities

  • Daily Care: Supporting children with routines like getting ready for school, mealtimes, and winding down at night.
  • Emotional Support: Listening, talking, and helping children manage big feelings with patience and empathy.
  • Education & Activities: Encouraging hobbies, new experiences and learning that build confidence and joy.
  • Health & Wellbeing: Promoting healthy routines, attending appointments, and supporting medication when needed.
  • Positive Behaviour Support: Helping children feel understood and supported, using de‑escalation when required.
  • Teamwork: Working closely with your colleagues to plan care, reflect together, and create consistent, nurturing homes.
  • Recording: Keeping accurate notes on wellbeing, progress and achievements.
  • Sleep‑In Shifts: Offering calm, reassuring overnight support so children feel safe at all times.

This is deeply rewarding work challenging at times, but full of moments that remind you why you do it. You\’ll help children believe in themselves and start to trust the adults around them again.

About You

You\’re someone who naturally cares, brings energy to a team, and wants to make a genuine difference every day. We are looking for Residential Support Workers to join our friendly, growing teams across Stockport\’s Children\’s Homes. You’ll be part of a service that is proud of its work, ambitious for its young people, and committed to helping staff develop, grow and thrive.

Qualifications & Experience

You don\’t have lots of previous experience but you can evidence warmth, patience and the right values. We\’ll provide full training and support to help you succeed and grow in the role. We are looking for people who are:

  • Caring, energetic and calm under pressure.
  • Great at building relationships and working as part of a team.
  • Able to work a mix of shifts—including evenings, weekends and sleep‑ins.
  • Hold a Full UK driving licence.

Stockport Council holds a Visa sponsorship licence but this can only be used for certain roles and this campaign does not currently qualify. Please note that we have made a commitment to improve the employment opportunities for people with disabilities, care leavers and ex‑military personnel. As part of the Guaranteed Assessment Scheme you will therefore be guaranteed to be shortlisted for Assessment if you meet both the criteria for the scheme and the essential job role criteria. Find out if you meet the criteria here: https://www.greater.jobs/our-guaranteed-assessment-scheme.

Benefits

When you join Stockport\’s Residential Service, you can expect:

  • Strong personal and team development, including ongoing training, reflection and career progression.
  • Supportive colleagues who care about each other as much as the children.
  • Competitive pay with evening, weekend and sleep‑in enhancements.
  • Flexible working patterns that fit around life.
  • A chance to be part of a service that is growing, improving and proud of its work.

Our values, Stockport, Team, Ambition, Respect guide everything we do.
