Overview
Bilingual Assistants work with children who are new to English to help them settle into school life and support them in accessing the curriculum. They encourage children to continue to use, develop and value their first language whilst learning English. They also play an important role in developing the self‑esteem of children from ethnically diverse backgrounds and support school relationships with parents.
Responsibilities
- Support children in school when a referral is made; assist with EAL provision.
- Work independently and proactively; undertake training and ongoing professional development.
- Register with the Update Service within 30 days of receiving DBS clearance; pay the annual subscription of £13.
- Work within Stockport Council’s Ethnic Diversity Service, which provides a wide range of support for schools and children learning and using English as an Additional Language.
Qualifications
- Bilingual or multilingual; clear communicator in English and an additional language.
- Experience working with children, ideally in an educational setting.
- Team‑player with excellent interpersonal and relationship‑building skills.
- Proactive, able to work independently, and keen to undergo training and ongoing professional development.
Employment Conditions
Stockport Council holds a Visa sponsorship licence, but this role does not qualify. The position is a casual role; if you meet the criteria for the Guaranteed Assessment Scheme you will be guaranteed to be shortlisted for assessment.
