Overview
Bank SEND Teacher (Flexible Cover) at Heaton School. Location: Heaton School, Stockport. Contract: Bank / Casual (as-needed cover). Salary: Main and Upper Scale considered. Closing date: 16 August 2026. Interview: early September 2026. Start: September 2026. This role offers highly flexible working hours to pick up shifts matching availability and support secondary-aged pupils with severe, profound, or complex learning difficulties, complex medical conditions, and associated challenging behaviours.
The Role
In this role you will lead small class teams and deliver highly individualised learning opportunities within a safe, nurturing environment where education, care, and therapy are integrated.
- Adaptive Curriculum Delivery: deliver highly differentiated lesson plans tailored to cognitive and physical needs using Total Communication strategies (Makaton, PECS, AAC).
- IEP & Data Implementation: follow SMART IEPs and monitor progress using SEND assessment frameworks.
- Behaviour & Sensory Support: implement Positive Behaviour Support plans, sensory diets, and Team Teach techniques to manage behaviours safely and empathetically.
- Medical & Physical Care: coordinate with the school nursing team to follow IHCPs, accommodate medical needs (e.g., PEG feeding, seizure management) and physical management (hoisting) with dignity.
- Classroom Leadership: direct and deploy TAs/HLTAs during cover shift.
About You
Essential Criteria:
- Qualifications: Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) or QTLS, with evidence of professional development.
- Experience: Proven experience teaching and managing classroom support staff, implementing learning plans, and tracking student progress. Primary KS1/KS2 experience valued.
- Knowledge: Understanding of the UK SEND Code of Practice, alternative communication methods, and certified training in positive handling (e.g., Team Teach) or willingness to undertake training.
- Attributes: High emotional resilience, empathy, patience, sense of humour, and flexibility to adapt to changing classroom dynamics.
Desirable Criteria:
- Experience teaching SEND, preferably in a UK Special School.
- Experience with the EQUALS curriculum, autism provision, or writing SMART targets for high-needs learners.
- Training in medical interventions (PEG feeding, Midazolam) or high physical fitness for active handling.
