The Opportunity
We are supporting a growing UK-based technology business operating within a platform-led, mobile-first environment. The business has an established product and user base and is now entering its next phase of growth. As part of this, they are looking to appoint a Chief Technology Officer to take ownership of the technology function, bring structure to the current environment, and drive the platform forward. This is a high-impact role with direct exposure to senior leadership and the opportunity to shape the future direction of the product and technology strategy.
The Role
This is not a traditional, hands-off CTO position. The business requires someone who can operate at a strategic level, while still being comfortable getting into the detail - reviewing architecture, challenging decisions, and supporting delivery where needed. You will take ownership of the existing platform, assess the current setup, and implement improvements across engineering, delivery and scalability.
Key Responsibilities
- Own and evolve the technical strategy and architecture
- Assess the current platform and identify risks, gaps and opportunities
- Reduce reliance on single points of failure within the technology function
- Lead and support a small engineering team
- Remain close to the codebase and capable of being hands-on where required
- Improve standards across deployment, testing and delivery
- Drive automation and explore AI-led improvements
- Align technology with wider business goals
- Introduce structure, accountability and best practice across engineering
Candidates do not need to have worked across the full stack, but should be confident in understanding and improving similar environments.
What We’re Looking For
- Experience as a CTO, Head of Engineering or senior technical leader
- Strong architectural understanding across web, mobile and backend systems
- Background in startup, scale-up or SME environments
- Hands-on engineering capability (ideally PHP/Laravel or similar)
- Experience building or improving scalable platforms
- Exposure to automation, AI or data-led improvements
- Commercial awareness and ability to operate within a leadership team
- Strong communication skills across technical and non-technical stakeholders
The Type of Person
We are looking for someone who can:
- Think strategically but execute practically
- Lead from the front, not from a distance
- Bring structure without slowing the business down
- Operate effectively in a growing and evolving environment
- Challenge and influence at leadership level
