Overview
Stirling Dynamics is recruiting for a Senior/Principal Modelling and Simulation Engineer to join the Simulation, Dynamics and Control capability group.
Due to upcoming projects and continued growth, Stirling Dynamics are looking for a talented and experienced Modelling and Simulation Engineer to join our expanding team within the Marine Business Unit delivering into both commercial and defence environments. We are looking for permanent employees, but will also consider contractors.
The Simulation, Dynamics and Control capability provides expertise to both internal and external customers in all areas of analysis but the below are particularly relevant for the role we are looking to recruit:
- Control
- System performance
- Equipment modelling
- Vehicle dynamics
Modelling, simulation, dynamics, and control has always been at the core of Stirling Dynamics\β capabilities, and we have been at the fore front of developing modelling techniques and model-based design activities for over 30 years. Modelling has never been more important for engineering design, with requirements for reverse engineering, root cause analysis and real time models. Within this role you will have the opportunity to work with other like-minded engineers across our Marine business area and support the further development and growth of the business.
As a business, Stirling Dynamics work across a wide variety of projects from significant modifications on civil and military aircraft; development projects for large aerospace OEMs; concepts and feasibility studies for the emerging eVTOL industry; controller actuation development for simulator and flight worthy products and control and automation covering submarine autopilots and flight control laws.
This role will be predominantly based in our Bristol office with occasional travel to our clientsβ sites as required. As part of our commitment to flexibility, we also accept hybrid working.
Responsibilities
- The role will suit an engineer looking to diversify or develop their experience and work within a team responsible for producing models at vehicle and system level representing plant and control algorithms. The Mathworks toolset is used heavily including Simulink and associated toolboxes, and a good understanding of the use of version control software (e.g. GIT) and task management toolsets as part of collaborative working is required.
- Candidates will have the following responsibilities (depending on experience):
- Developing task definition (together with the technical lead)
- Defining model and control algorithm requirements
- Build and test of models
- Peer review of models
- Preparation and presentation of results, models etc to customers
- Formal verification procedures
- Authoring model documentation
Qualifications
- Candidates will be degree qualified (or equivalent), in a related discipline preferably Aerospace Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering or Mathematics, and must be able to demonstrate a good understanding of fundamental modelling principles of systems through experience.
Essential skills
- Matlab/Simulink
- Hydro-actuated systems
- Electro-mechanical actuated systems
- Multi-body simulation
- Vehicle dynamics
- Systems engineering
Desired skills
- Application within the Marine sector
- Advanced control theory, such as Kalman filters, and state estimation
- Real time models
- Code generation using Simulink and Python
- Flexible, can-do approach
- Ability to deal with multiple conflicting requests
- Professional attitude
- Self-motivated to see tasks through to successful completion
- Strong time management and organisational skills
Experience
- The candidate is expected to have industrial engineering experience, using modelling for the development and analysis of complex systems.
- We are particularly interested in individuals with a background in ANY of the following disciplines:
- Hydro-actuated systems
- Electro-mechanical actuated systems
- Multi-body simulation
- Vehicle dynamics
- Systems engineering
- Flight controls
- Dynamic loads
- Real time models
- Motor control
- Vehicle control
- Actuation systems
- ARP4754
- DO178
- DO331
What do I need before I apply
- Due to security restrictions on the projects, we can only consider UK nationals for this role.
Benefits
Competitive package β Grade 4-7, Β£45,000-Β£65,000 dependent on experience.
We offer a range of benefits to our employees to recognise their efforts. Playing hard is equally as important as working hard, so regular events are held throughout the year which provide an ideal opportunity to mix socially.
