STIM has operations in Scotland, Ireland, Norway, Chile and Iceland. STIM Environmental Services provides benthic surveys, consultancy and training to the Scottish aquaculture industry.

Role Description

STIM Scotland Ltd is looking for a full-time broad spectrum Marine Invertebrate Biologist who will have responsibility for
delivering conventional, key based faunal ID as part
of our well established Environmental Services operations
. Based in one of our Scottish laboratories (Inverness or Glasgow), or homeworking in the UK, the biologist would work closely with our existing team to support and grow our laboratory service offering to aquaculture in the UK and more widely.

This is NOT a vacancy for an eDNA bioinformatics technician

Key responsibilities include:

Identification of fauna (fixed marine invertebrates removed from benthic sediment samples) to species level

Provision of Excel faunal matrices including WoRMS and UKTAG IQI Workbook compatible species names

Maintaining technical quality and relevant accreditations and certifications, including participation in the NMBAQC Scheme

(Occasional) In-house staff training

Development and maintenance of Reference Collections

Qualifications

Must have permission to work in UK

Must have an excellent command of spoken and written English

Should be educated to degree level in a relevant discipline, holding at least a BSc-level degree in biology or a related subject.

Should have formal training as a marine biologist processing benthic invertebrate samples.

Should have a minimum of three years (recent) commercial laboratory experience.

Preferably able to deliver whole ID projects without collaboration

Should have experience or familiarity with UK invertebrate species; broad spectrum taxonomic skills are preferable.

Some formal training or qualification in laboratory management (including laboratory regulations, good laboratory practice, LMS and quality standards) would be preferable.

Should have proven ability to work as part of a team

Should have a positive track record in quality control/ audits/ accreditations- especially participation in NMBAQC Ring Tests and OWN samples.

Should be self-motivated and autonomous with effective time management abilities, good at working under pressure and to strict deadlines
