Pertemps are recruiting on behalf of an internationally renowned engineering organisation for a Test Engineer Hardware Build to join their Test Engineering team in Chippenham. This role would suit an experienced Test Engineer with a strong hardware build background, or a highly experienced Wireperson / Assembly Technician looking to progress further into Test Engineering.
You will play a key role in the build, commissioning, and support of automated and manual test equipment used both internally and by external customers and service providers.
Role Overview:The Hardware Test Development Engineer will work closely with the Test Engineering department to build, commission, and maintain bespoke test equipment. The role combines hands-on hardware assembly and technical problem-solving.
Responsibilities:- Work collaboratively with Test Development Engineers to select and design hardware solutions that meet test requirements
- Build, test, commission, and maintain automated and manual test equipment
- Source suitable components, materials, and equipment
- Translate product specifications into power distribution layouts, safety circuits, and protective enclosures
- Carry out mechanical and electrical assembly of test rigs and equipment
- Interpret equipment specifications and generate channel lists
- Liaise with external suppliers, service providers, and test facilities
- Engage with internal departments and customers as required
- Apply knowledge of IEC electrical safety standards, including high-voltage applications
- Provide regular progress updates to project teams and the Engineering Manager
- Undertake additional tasks as requested by the Engineering Manager
- Minimum 3 years experience in testing or development (5+ years preferred)
- Strong hands-on hardware build experience (electrical and mechanical)
- Ability to work independently with excellent troubleshooting and problem-solving skills
- High attention to detail with a strong commitment to quality
- Ability to interpret test standards, customer requirements, and internal specifications
- Experience planning and executing prototype and proof-of-concept builds
- Comfortable liaising with customers, suppliers, and external facilities
- Ability to work under pressure and meet project deadlines
- Proficient in Microsoft Office applications
- Knowledge of CAD software (preferably SolidWorks)
- Familiarity with IEC electrical safety standards and safety testing
- Understanding of IPC manufacturing standards
- Knowledge of automotive, railway, and BS standards
