Role Summary

About the role: ISIS Neutron and Muon Source produces beams of neutrons and muons that allow scientists to study materials at the atomic level using a suite of instruments, often described as ‘super-microscopes’. It supports a national and international community of more than 3000 scientists who use neutrons and muons for research in physics, chemistry, materials science, geology, engineering, and biology.

We are looking for a graduate to play an exciting role in sharing ISIS science and engineering, and the people who make the facility what it is, with a range of audiences. This role will develop your communication skills through written and other formats. We promote the facility through multiple channels including our website and social media.

You might be a science student wanting to switch into science communication or a journalism student seeking to specialise in science. The STFC Graduate scheme will give you the opportunity to pursue your interests with technical training and a broader programme of career support and training and development. Our dedicated Graduate Development Team will provide challenge and support throughout, helping you achieve your ambitions. We will provide mentoring and expertise to help you achieve valued qualifications or chartered status in your chosen field.

Key Duties & Responsibilities will be conducted with the support and guidance of your manager. There will be opportunities to drive your own communications projects, be involved in project impact and evaluation, and develop new skills via guidance, training and the attendance of conferences and events.

• Researching and communicating our science, engineering and people through a range of written, verbal and visual channels. Creating and developing content for our website and social media.
• Developing case studies of staff and industry. Photography, videography and graphic design of promotional material.
• Producing the facility’s internal newsletter and maintaining the intranet. Keeping the ISIS publication database accurate and up to date.
• Supporting other team activities including visits and events.

What we’re looking for

• Achieved, or be on course to achieve, a minimum 2:1 degree, in a relevant field of study
• Have the right to live and work in the UK at time of starting employment
• Keen interest in science and science communication
• Experience in graphic design, social media or video/audio production
• Experience in writing for publication
• The willingness to learn new skills, both technical and non-technical
• Excellent written communication skills and excellent time management skills, highly organised and proactive to balance complex workloads
